Every season of Cold Spiral tells a new crime story, but the Harbor One anthology has one stubborn constant: the Hollow King, a figure from northern folklore who seems to haunt every case without ever quite appearing. Season 4 moved the action to Vossbreen, a remote Arctic research station cut off by winter, and the production design team clearly had a field day. The background is packed with symbols that tie back to the myth. Here are seven we think deserve a second look. Timestamps refer to the episode cuts as they stream; this is speculation from fans, for fans.

Symbols on the station itself

1. The carvings on the radio towers

Episode 1, around 04:30. As the supply plane lands, the camera pans across the twin radio towers at the edge of the station. Look at the base of the western tower: someone has carved a spiral into the frozen timber, turning inward, counterclockwise. The same mark appears in the opening credits of every season. Its placement on the communication towers feels deliberate. In the folklore the show has built, the Hollow King "listens to every voice carried on the wind," and the towers are the only way Vossbreen talks to the outside world.

2. The frost on the lab window

Episode 3, around 22:10. When Dr. Arne Halvik discovers the tampered ice cores, the frost on the window behind him forms a faint spiral. It could be a lucky visual effect, but this show does not do lucky. Halvik is the first character to say the Hollow King's name aloud this season, and the frost appears seconds before he does.

3. The missing calendar day

Episode 4, around 11:45. The mess-hall calendar has one date crossed out in black, not with an X but with a coiled line. That date is the night the first researcher disappeared. In season 2, a hotel ledger had a page torn out on the same calendar date. Fans have been arguing about this cross-season connection for years, and season 4 just added fuel.

Symbols carried by the characters

4. The forensic examiner's ring

Episode 5, around 31:20. This is the big one. Forensic examiner Liv Sandqvist removes her gloves to examine a body, and for the first time we see her ring clearly: a silver band engraved with a tight spiral and a tiny crown. The crown detail matters. Every previous spiral in the series has been plain. Adding a crown ties the symbol directly to the King himself, and to a character who is supposed to be the most rational person in the room.

If the person reading the evidence wears the King's mark, how much of that evidence can we trust?

5. The children's drawing

Episode 6, around 08:05. The station cook keeps a drawing taped to the fridge, made by his daughter back home. It shows a tall figure with an empty, hollow chest, standing beside a lighthouse. The station has no lighthouse. But season 3 was set in a coastal town with one. Either the cook has a connection to the earlier case, or the show is quietly suggesting the Hollow King moves between stories through the people who remember him.

6. The knot on the rescue rope

Episode 7, around 40:50. During the whiteout rescue, the rope tied to the snowmobile is finished with an unusual knot that coils back on itself. Halvik remarks that it's "an old fisherman's knot" before the storm drowns him out. In the folklore, the Hollow King is said to have been a fisherman who sold his heart to the ice. A small detail, delivered in a rush, which is exactly how this show hides its best clues.

The final image

7. The spiral in the snow

Episode 8, final shot. As the relief plane lifts off and the station shrinks below, the drone shot reveals that the footpaths around Vossbreen, trampled through a whole winter, form a giant spiral visible only from above. The researchers walked the King's sign into the ice without realizing it. It's a gorgeous, chilling final image, and it reframes the season: maybe the station was never haunted. Maybe the people built the haunting themselves, one step at a time.

What it all means for season 5

Harbor One has not confirmed a fifth season or a new setting, so everything here is speculation. Still, a few patterns stand out when you put the seven symbols side by side:

  • The myth is spreading. The lighthouse drawing and the calendar date tie season 4 to earlier seasons more directly than ever before. The anthology may be quietly becoming a single long story.
  • The King is getting a face. The crown on Sandqvist's ring is the most specific the show has been. We would not be surprised if season 5 finally shows us something of the figure itself.
  • The plane matters. The relief plane carries several survivors south. If one of them carries the spiral too, the next setting could be anywhere they land.

Our pick for the character most likely to return? Liv Sandqvist. A forensic examiner who wears the mark of the very legend she's supposed to debunk is too rich a thread to leave behind.

Did we miss one?

Seven is just where we stopped counting. Rewatchers keep reporting spirals in the steam from coffee mugs, in the wiring under the generator room floor and in the pattern of a knitted scarf in episode 2. Some of those are probably coincidence. Some are probably not. If you've spotted a symbol we missed, tell us at [email protected], and keep an eye out for our discussion threads, which are coming soon.
