Harry Kane says he will be “fine” to play in England’s European Championship semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Kane, 30, was substituted in the second period of extra time after colliding with Gareth Southgate on the touchline.

The England captain was ushered out of play by Switzerland and Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji and tumbled towards the dugout where he clattered into his manager before falling over a container of water bottles.

Kane received brief treatment on his right leg before being helped to his feet.

The Bayern Munich striker was replaced by Brentford’s Ivan Toney and took his place on the substitutes’ bench for the remainder of the game.

Asked if he expects to be fit for the next game, Kane replied: “Yeah, I’m fine — I was just tired. I had a bit of cramp there. I tripped over the water bottles and got cramp in both calves.

“The boss made a quick decision obviously with Iv(an Toney), a proven penalty taker. He came on and did the job.”

Kane was able to join his team-mates on the pitch to celebrate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s winning spot kick sealed a 5-3 victory in the penalty shootout after the game finished 1-1 in normal time.

England have been criticised for the manner of their performances in Germany but Kane believes they have made a step in the right direction.

“It was definitely our best performance,” he said. “The system caused them problems and we got on the ball more. We played in their final third more. Still just lacked a bit of end product.

“Tournaments are tough. These games are tough. You have to find a way to get through them.

“The longer we go in the competition in the manner that we’re doing, it just give us more and more belief that we’re finding ways to win. That’s an important factor in big competitions.

“We’re enjoying the ride. We’re proud to be in another semi-final. We know how much it means to everyone back home watching as well. We want to do everyone proud. That would be no different on Wednesday.”

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker also hailed the performance of Bukayo Saka, who scored in the shootout three years after missing in England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

“To play a new position, I know he’s played there before, but a different position to what he’s used… I know he’s been eager to help the team by getting on the scoresheet,” said Kane.

“For him to play the way he did for 120 minutes, not just with the ball but without the ball, you could see he was absolutely knackered at the end.

“For him to step up and do what he did, to score the penalty in the manner that he did, it was really special. Couldn’t be prouder of him.”

Kane is England’s all-time record goalscorer and has found the net twice in his five Euro 2024 appearances so far.

England will now play the Netherlands in Dortmund for a place in the final, against Spain or France in Berlin next Sunday, after the Dutch beat Turkey 2-1 in the last eight.
