Euro 2024 Milestones: Guler Third Teenager after Rooney and Ronaldo, Gakpo Joins Bergkamp and Van Persie

The Round of 16 in Euro 2024 has come to an end on Tuesday with two more teams booking their spots in the quarterfinals. Cody Gakpo scored his third goal of the tournament as he played a pivotal role in Netherlands beating Romania 3-0.

In the other match, Turkey, with the help of their goalkeeper Mert Gunok, clinched a last-eight spot after beating Austria 2-1.

Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo became his country’s youngest player to score and assist in a knockout match against in a major tournament since Marco van Basten did it in the final of Euro 1988 — 23 years, 238 days.

3 and 3

Gakpo is also one of the four Dutch players with 3+ World Cup goals and 3+ Euro goals, joining the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Robin van Persie, Memphis Depay.

Only Pierre van Hooijdonk (10) scored more goals for the Netherlands as a substitute than Donyell Malen (8 – along with Klaas Jan Huntelaar). Malen is also the first-ever Dutch player to score twice after coming off the bench in Euro history.

21 years, 10 months, 16 days

Bart Verbruggen is the youngest goalkeeper in Euro history with a clean sheet in a knockout stage game.

Netherlands’ Xavi Simons became the first player to provide 3+ assists at Euro 2024 and just the second player to provide 2+ assists in a single game at the tournament.

Austria 1-2 Turkey

Turkey’s Arda Guler is the third teenager to both score and assist in the same edition of the Euro after Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, who both did so at Euro 2004.

93%

Mert Gunok’s save for Turkey at 90’+4 of stoppage time had an “Expected Goals on Target” value of 0.93 (shot had roughly a 93% chance of going in).

That makes it the most unlikely save, per xGOT, in stoppage time of World Cups, Euros or Copa America since 2018.

57 seconds

Turkey’s Merih Demiral scored inside 57 seconds against Austria, which makes it the earliest goal in Euro knockout round history.

17

Through the Round of 16, there have been 17 goal contributions from players under 22 years old at this European Championship, 1 away from tying the 2004 edition for the most goal contributions by players under 22 at a European Championship since 1980.

The 2004 tournament featured the following notable U-22s: Wayne Rooney (5 G+A), Cristiano Ronaldo (4 G+A) and Arjen Robben (3 G+A).
