Rising Star “Wednesday” Takes a Fall as Film Drops Out of Netflix US Top 10 After One Week

"Miller's Girl" Screening At Palm Springs International Film Festival

Miller’s Girl—Jenna Ortega’s controversial movie about an inappropriate relationship between a student and her much older teacher—has made a surprising early exit from Netflix’s Top 10 U.S. Movies chart.

The R-rated psychological drama debuted on Netflix on April 26, about three months after a brief U.S. theatrical run. Ortega’s fans quickly embraced the film on Netflix—the streaming home of the actor’s hit series Wednesday—and it leaped into the No. 5 slot on the streamer’s Top 10 U.S. Movies chart for the week of April 29 to May 5.

In Miller’s Girl’s Netflix U.S. Top 10 debut, the movie finished behind Anyone But You at No. 1, which was followed by The Judge, Unfrosted and The Great Wall.Miller’s Girl stars Ortega as Cairo Sweet, an 18-year-old high school senior who embarks on an inappropriate relationship with her literary teacher Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman). The film attracted controversy because of the large age gap between Ortega and Miller’s characters and the provocative way they interact with each other.

Freeman tackled the controversy in a recent interview with The Times of London in late April, saying Miller’s Girl was “grown-up and nuanced”—but was cautious to point out, “It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t this great?'”

The Netflix original romantic comedy Mother of the Bride topped the U.S. movies chart for the week of May 6-12, but Miller’s Girl dropped out of the Top 10 completely.

While Jenna Ortega fans have Netflix’s Wednesday Season 2 and director Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice to look forward to, she will also be appearing in the romantic drama Winter Spring Summer or Fall.

Winter Spring Summer or Fall will screen three nights at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City beginning with its world premiere on June 6.

Directed by frequent Emma Roberts collaborator Tiffany Paulsen, Winter Spring Summer or Fall stars Ortega as Remi and her Wednesday co-star Percy Hynes White as Barnes.

The love story takes place over a year—and all four seasons—as Remi and Barnes try to navigate the challenges of their relationship as she prepares to go to Harvard and he decides to take a gap year before figuring out what’s next.

Winter Spring Summer or Fall is still awaiting a U.S. release date. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, meanwhile is scheduled for a September 6 theatrical release and filming is already underway on Wednesday Season 2.

Both Miller’s Girl and Wednesday Season 1 are streaming on Netflix.
