Here’s our analysis and ranking of the best ‘Bridgerton’ wedding dresses, from Penelope and Francesca to Daphne and Edwina.
If there’s one thing Bridgerton does well (other than leaving viewers hot under the collar for its steamy sex scenes, thirsty for its drama, and giving standing ovations for on-screen representation of diverse members of society), it’s throw a killer wedding.
In season one, we were treated to Daphne and Simon’s wisteria-filled wedding, which saw the newlyweds dance in the rain following their ceremony. We then saw Edwina and Anthony say ‘I do’, with the bride’s veil draping along the floor and physically separating her sister Kate and the groom (whose chemistry was off the charts).
In season three, viewers were gifted a double wedding, thanks to Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton’s nuptials, with the bride walking down the aisle to an orchestral rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’, before Francesca wed John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin, in an adorable intimate ceremony.
Of course, no nuptial in the Ton is complete without some much-needed bridal couture, which is why we can’t get over the range of wedding dress options the likes of Daphne, Edwina, Penelope and Francesca chose for their big days.
Here’s our analysis and ranking of the best Bridgerton wedding dresses:
1
Penelope Featherington – 9/10
NETFLIX
Taking a page out of Jessica Biel, Kaley Cuoco and Mandy Moore’s bridal book, Penelope chose to wear a pink wedding dress for her big day with Colin. The dress feature a slight V-shape neckline, button-up back, and a bustle veil, yet was relatively simple compared to its Bridgerton bridal contemporaries. ‘Wedding dresses at this time weren’t always white,’ costume designer John Glaser told Vulture of the colour choice. ‘It’s just that the modern audience thinks of them as white.’
Initially, the Bridgerton costume department had intended for the dress to be ‘Bridgerton blue’, but the ‘peach and pink’ colour matched actor Nicola Coughlan’s skin tone much better, and suited the Featherington colour palette – think warm, bright colours – more so than the Bridgerton’s cool pastel hues.
While we love the Vivienne Westwood-esque silhouette of the dress, we probably could have done without the small sheer gloves, but we’ll overlook this small detail given how chic Penelope looks.
2
Francesca Bridgerton – 8/10
NETFLIX
Forget tradition because Francesca’s wedding dress – with its ruffle collar and beaded shoulder detailing – was fitting for a modern-day Chanel Haute Couture catwalk in our eyes.
The super simple dress came in an off-white colour and featured long, sheer sleeves with beading around the shoulders and waistline. While we’re not the biggest fan of the empire waistline (very Noughties, in our opinion) the overall feel of the look feels far more modern than its competition.
3
Daphne Bridgerton – 7/10
LIAM DANIEL/NETFLIX//NETFLIX
For someone who wore a total of 104 dresses in season one of Bridgerton, you can forgive Daphne for suffering a bit of fashion brain fog when it came to her wedding dress.
For her big day, Daphne wore a cap-sleeved white dress with a lace sheer trim along the wide bust-line of her floral-embroidered dress, styled with elbow-length white gloves and a large diamond-encrusted tiara, drop earrings and necklace. In addition to giving us Princess Diary vibes, we feel the overall look is missing something – perhaps the jewellery could’ve been a bit more dramatic, or the cap sleeves more exaggerated?
Overall, it’s a beautiful dress, but needed that extra flair.
4
Edwina Bridgerton – 6/10
NETFLIX
The fact Edwina made it down the aisle, what with the love triangle between her, her brother-in-law Anthony and sister Kate, is a miracle, so let’s not be too harsh about her wedding dress choice.
For her big day Edwina wore an ivory-hued dress which featured a lace overlay with delicate embroidered flowers styled with elbow-length gloves, and a gold and pearl choker necklace. The overall look is a bit too simple and traditional for our liking (see: the neckline), but the silhouette suits Edwina’s petite frame, and the addition of the accessories takes her bridal look to new heights (Daphne, take note).
An added element of sheer or less pearl detailing across the dress would’ve taken this to a seven.
