Maya Gebala, 12, was shot in the head and neck during the school shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in Canada. She remains hospitalized as doctors continue to monitor her condition following the traumatic injuries.
Maya is among at least two dozen students and teachers wounded in the attack. According to her mother, Cia Edmonds, medical staff warned that the extent of the brain damage was severe and that her daughter might not survive.
“We were warned that the damage to her brain was too much for her to endure, and that she wouldn’t make it through the night,” Edmonds said Wednesday afternoon.

Writing from her daughter’s hospital bedside, Edmonds shared an emotional message asking for prayers.
“I never thought I’d be asking for prayers,” she wrote. “But please, please pray for my baby. She needs a miracle.”
Doctors treating Maya have not publicly disclosed specific details regarding her neurological condition. Medical experts note that gunshot wounds involving the head and neck are among the most critical forms of trauma, often requiring intensive neurological monitoring and supportive care.
Despite the difficult prognosis, Maya continues to fight for her life. Her family has described each passing hour as uncertain, yet filled with hope.
Maya and the other injured victims remain under medical supervision as the broader community processes the tragedy. Vigils and prayer gatherings have been organized in support of those affected.
Edmonds expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support received from friends, neighbors, and people across the country.
“Please pray for healing, strength, and comfort over her and our family during this unimaginable time,” she said. “We hope all the injured children and adults survive.”
As Maya remains in intensive care, her mother’s message has resonated widely. In a community shaken by violence, many continue to offer prayers for recovery and resilience.
