A Chicago firefighter has died after sustaining critical injuries while responding to an apartment fire in the Rogers Park neighborhood. The firefighter, identified as Mike Altman, was injured during efforts to contain the blaze and later succumbed to his injuries in the intensive care unit.
The incident occurred Monday around 11:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of West North Shore Avenue, according to the Chicago Fire Department. Altman was among the first responders battling the fire inside the residential building when the situation escalated.
Authorities reported that Altman fell from the first floor into the basement while actively working to control the fire. Emergency crews were able to locate and rescue him within approximately one minute. Despite the rapid response, he had already sustained severe injuries during the incident.

Medical officials confirmed that Altman suffered extensive second- and third-degree burns across his body. He was transported to a hospital and placed in intensive care, where doctors worked to stabilize his condition. Despite those efforts, he later died from complications related to his injuries.
Altman is survived by his wife and young child, with another child on the way. The news of his death has had a profound impact on both the firefighting community and the broader public, as tributes began to emerge honoring his service and sacrifice.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the loss, describing Altman as a hero who gave his life in the line of duty. Officials emphasized that the city had lost not only a public servant but also a dedicated individual committed to protecting others.
Firefighters often face unpredictable and dangerous conditions while responding to emergencies, and incidents like this highlight the risks involved in the profession. Falls, structural hazards, and extreme heat can all contribute to life-threatening situations even during routine calls.
The Rogers Park community has also been affected by the tragedy, with residents expressing gratitude for the efforts of emergency responders and mourning the loss of a firefighter who was working to protect lives and property.
Investigations into the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing. Authorities are expected to review the scene and gather information to better understand what led to the accident.
As the city reflects on the loss, Altman is being remembered not only for his service but also for his role as a husband and father. His death underscores the personal sacrifices made by those who serve in emergency roles, leaving behind families and communities who must cope with the impact of their loss.
