We’re friends ’til the end!
While fans of the Chucky franchise may be disappointed that Netflix did not acquire all of the movies and shows, the streamer did pick up 5 to entertain its viewers. So if you crave some horror absurdity in your life, the Chucky movie marathon is a perfect option for a weekend night.
However, not all movies are equally as good and fun to watch. So if you don’t have the time or inclination to indulge in the entire franchise, check out the list below to see which movies are worth seeing and which ones you can skip.
Child’s Play 3 (1991) – 19%
Even though the movie is not the newest one in the franchise, it still managed to get the lowest raking of them all, and even the nostalgia factor cannot save it. Even those who consider themselves fans of the franchise and the slasher genre were not impressed, but thoroughly disappointed by the movie.
One thing that no slasher can afford to be is boring, and Child’s Play 3 is exactly that. Relying on the very same characters and premise, the movie feels tired and is not worth anyone’s time.
Child’s Play 2 (1990) – 44%
While the jump from 19% to 44% is an obvious indicator of how much better the second movie is than the third, it still falls short of earning a Certified Fresh title. While the movie may be entertaining for those who consider themselves die-hard Chucky fans, everyone else will end up disappointed.
Child’s Play 2 suffers from the same problems as any other sequel. It lacks originality, doesn’t live up to the effort that went into the first installment and fails to attract new viewers to the franchise by focusing more on existing fans.
Bride of Chucky (1998) – 48%
While the movie may not be critically acclaimed, it is popular with general audiences. The story of Chucky and his new bride, Tiffany, is as chilling as it is entertaining, and some of the film’s most prominent moments have gone viral on the Internet years after the film’s premiere. If that’s not a testament to its quality, we don’t know what is!
Should you expect Bride of Chucky to be a cinematic masterpiece? Of course not. However, if you are looking for an entertaining late-night flick, it may be just the thing for you.
Curse of Chucky (2013) – 79%
It’s not often that we get to see reboots done so well that they actually do the franchise justice and manage to bring more positive attention to it, but Curse of Chucky has done just that. The 2013 film breaks the curse of wacky sequels that writers have set up after the initial success, reimagining the character while taking audiences back to his roots.
The sixth film in the franchise is well made, thoroughly thought out, and shows Chucky to be as terrifying as ever. This movie may also be the scariest of the ones Netflix is adding in August, so check it out if you want some thrills.
Cult of Chucky (2017) – 81%
You may not find Cult of Chucky serious or suspenseful enough to fully immerse you in the cinematic universe, but the movie manages to stay entertaining without it. It is humorous and gory, which is a great combination when it comes to characters as absurd as a ginger killer doll.
The movie tops the ratings of all Chucky movies of all time, losing the first place in a franchise only to the 2021 TV show. However, the Syfy series is not available for streaming on Netflix, so Cult of Chucky can comfortably hold the top spot in this particular collection without any interference.
