The Four Seasons premiered on Netflix on May 1 to rave reviews, but fans of Steve Carell and Tina Fey‘s new comedy have been left in suspense after the finale ended on a shocking cliffhanger, leaving many to wonder whether they will ever get to see the drama unfold. While there is no official Season 2 renewal as yet, Fey and her fellow co-creators Tracey Wigfield and Lang Fisher are hopeful about getting a chance to cycle through the seasons — as in Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter — with the cast for a second time.

The Four Seasons adapts the 1981 film of the same name, which was written and directed by Alan Alda. The series follows three sets of couples: Kate (Fey) and Jack (Will Forte), Danny (Colman Domingo) and Claude (Marco Calvani), and Nick (Carell) and Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver), with eight episodes depicting the ups and downs of life over the course of four seasonal vacations, through which one couple decides to divorce after 25 years of marriage. The biggest shock comes near the end of the series when Anne’s ex-husband Nick dies, leaving behind his new girlfriend Ginny (Erika Henningsen), who is pregnant with his baby.

Fey and Wigfield addressed whether The Four Seasons, which was originally dubbed a miniseries, could return for a second season on Netflix during a recent interview with TV Insider. The duo expressed optimism about their chances of scoring a renewal and even had some ideas about how the story could develop further over future episodes. It seems that they would want to work with the same core group of characters, but shift the focus to one person in particular, picking up on a significant thread left behind by the finale.

“If we did another season, we would want the same group of friends, and we’d want Ginny to really be tied in there because she and Anne are going to have children who are siblings. And it just gives us a lot to play with in their relationship,” Wigfield explained, while Fey added: “I feel like we sort of don’t dare to dream yet, but we did. Who knows? If we were lucky enough to do more of these, we’d certainly all like to hang out again.”

‘The Four Seasons’ Topped Netflix’s English TV Charts

The Four Seasons managed to de-throne Season 5 of the psychological thriller You, which has an existing (and rabid) fan base, from the No. 1 spot on the English TV list after racking up 11.9 million views in its first four days on the streaming service. While it remains to be seen whether the series has the staying power to maintain its position over a longer period, the initial viewership figures point to a potential Season 2 renewal, as seen by other Netflix shows with similar success out the door, such as Nobody Wants This, Running Point, and A Man on the Inside.

The series currently sits at a solid 77% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus being that while it’s as “welcoming as a lakeside vista and occasionally just as placid, The Four Seasons isn’t as breezily funny as creator Tina Fey’s best work but often just as witty and wise.” The audience rating is slightly lower at 68%, with some people taking umbrage with Nick’s early exit from the series and the other characters not being fleshed out enough, but hopefully a second season would give the showrunners a chance to explore them further.
