Bridgerton”'s Nicola Coughlan Reveals the Prank She Pulled on Luke Newton After Learning He Was in a Boy Band (Exclusive)

Sex scene writer and producer Jaimee Bell delves into why Bridgerton’s new season is so spicy and spills her predictions for what’s to come in the hit Netflix show

Bridgerton came back with a bang last month – and fans say it may just be the raunchiest season yet.

From steamy mornings in bed, to fooling around in a horse and carriage, the 19th century characters certainly didn’t hold back for the hit show’s third series – and viewers weren’t shy about it either. “Bridgerton sex scenes are too intimate, I feel like I’m interrupting,” one person on X said, as another confessed: “Carriage scene was the best sex scene so far. Replayed it like 15 times. No further questions.”

But how does Bridgerton make its sex scenes hot but not cringy? Jaimee Bell, a sex scene writer and producer at Bloom Stories, gave The Mirror the lowdown on what exactly makes us tick without tipping us over the edge. She said: “The Bridgerton creators are really giving us what we want this season, bringing some of our favourite characters into the spotlight.

“The most loved, of course, being Penelope and Colin. We’ve been rooting for Penelope since day one and seeing her undergo a sexual awakening has made these erotic scenes even more rewarding.” Bridgerton’s third season delves into the story of Nicola Coughlan’s character Penelope Featherington, who’s seeking a marriage but hasn’t had much luck finding love.

Offering to help, her long friend Colin Bridgerton teaches her ‘how to court’, but the pair soon realise their feelings for one another, and it quickly becomes a full-blown romance. “Compared with romantic storylines from previous seasons, ‘Polin’s’ has moved a bit quicker.

“But given that we already got to know their characters in seasons one and two, it feels really natural and sweet. Their chemistry is electric, and the carriage scene is one of the sexiest scenes on the show to date.” Jaimee points to just a handful of key components that make this season a sexy success.

First, she claims its cast are masters of building tension. Lingering looks, long pauses, and subtle touches just make their eventual romance seem more worth it. This partnered with artistic camera framing and soft lighting is a match made in heaven.

“Sometimes, it’s so much sexier to not give it all away,” she told The Mirror. “Bridgerton’s intimacy coordinators did an incredible job this season. You can tell the cast feels comfortable with each other and were genuinely having a good time during filming.

“[Another is] focusing on female pleasure [too]. We love to see women really enjoying themselves on screen. The erotic scenes centre around female pleasure, showing them either taking the lead or, if not, then communicating explicit consent.”

However, Jaimee isn’t convinced the season gets everything right, as she claims there’s certainly more room for diversity in next high society plot. “Bridgerton is lauded as a trailblazer in diversity, and rightly so,” she stressed.

“We see diverse body types among the female characters, but there’s definitely more room for diversity in the male cast. An LGBTQ+ storyline would be a welcome addition, too. People of all shapes and sizes have sex, and this should be reflected – and celebrated – with more representation on our screens.”

With part two of the new season due to come out in just a week, Jaimee predicts the sex between Penelope and Colin will only seem more relaxed as the couple get more familiar with each other’s bodies. “Well-written sex scenes are a great tool for characters’ development and deepening their emotional bonds,” she said.

“Being vulnerable is the key to good sex, so to draw an audience in this needs to be reflected on screen. Bridgerton’s sex scenes humanise the characters, especially when compared with the restrained appearances they keep up in public as members of high society.

However, if you’re struggling to wait for the next instalment of Bridgerton, fear not. Jaimee also has four spicy movie and programme suggestions that may get you hot under the collar.
