When “Sirens” recently premiered on Netflix, the dark comedy was billed as a limited series. The story takes place over a holiday weekend. By the end of the five episodes, it had reached a natural conclusion, with completed character arcs. But, the series still left fans wanting more. With such strong reviews from both critics and the audience, could Netflix bring back “Sirens” for a second season?
The Netflix Hit Is Based on a Play
“Sirens” stars Meghann Fahy, Julianne Moore, and Milly Alcock, and Molly Smith Metzler is the creator. Based on her 2011 play “Elemeno Pea,” Metzler’s story unfolds at a lavish beach estate over Labor Day weekend. It’s described by Netflix as “an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class.”
Fahy plays a frustrated young woman named Devon, who is a caretaker for her father who has early-onset dementia. Alcock stars as her sister Simone, who works at a lavish New England estate for an ultra-wealthy socialite named Michaela “Kiki” Kell, played by Moore.
Devon travels to the estate to see her sister and soon realizes that Simone is addicted to a cultish life of luxury that Michaela provides to her as her personal assistant. Devon decides that Simone needs an intervention. But, Michaela has other plans. The series is full of twists and turns, with plenty of romance and drama. It also ends in an unexpected way for two of the main characters.
Will There Be a ‘Sirens’ Season 2?
The five episodes in season 1 came from limited source material. But, could there be more stories to tell about these characters? According to production designer John Paino, when it comes to the possibility of a “Sirens” season 2, “never say never.”
“I think there’s a lot to explore there,” Paino told Town & Country. “I would love to do it with everyone because it was a great experience.”
Fahy and Alcock would also be interested in another season. But, they both realize that there are pros and cons if they continue the series.
“Devon is one of my favorite characters I’ve ever played, and I love Molly and everybody who worked on the show so much that I would never say no to coming back,” Fahy said. “But on the other hand, I will say that I think where the story ends up really honors everything that came prior. I feel like they left it in a place that feels real for the characters. So, I do feel like they completed the story by the end.”
Alcock added that she “would love to explore a season 2” even though it would have to be “a different story.”
“I don’t know how it would link, because Simone and Devon’s relationship, we leave it at such a sad [point]. We leave these two women in this beautiful goodbye, so I don’t really know how, if there was to be a second season, how it would kind of go about. But of course, I think that Simone’s such a fascinating person. I’d love to,” Alcock explained.
‘Sirens’ Is at the Top of the Streaming Charts
As soon as “Sirens” dropped on Netflix, it skyrocketed to the number one spot on the streaming charts. The ending didn’t completely close the door on the Kells, so a season 2 isn’t out of the question.
Netflix has not confirmed another season of “Sirens.” But, the streamer does have a history of renewing similar limited series, like “Forever,” when they perform well. Metzler is excited by the questions about season 2 because it means that people love the characters she created — which she calls “the ultimate compliment.”
“These characters are real people to me. I wrote the play [that “Sirens” is based on] 15 years ago. I’ve been thinking about them this whole time. I could write them until the day I die. I’d never say never, but could I do them justice in another season? I’d have to think about it,” Metzler told Glamour.
All five episodes of “Sirens” are now available to stream on Netflix.
