Marina, Simon and Daphne in Bridgerton

Bridgerton would cease to exist without its most notorious character — the iconic Lady Whistledown whose writings often impact public opinion more than the Queen, much to the latter’s displeasure. Like everyone else, Charlotte spends most of her time awaiting the latest scandal sheet, and unsuccessfully attempting to unmask the identity of her detractor. Lady Whistledown’s power doesn’t lie in her slanderous expositions, but her anonymity.

If the ton were to discover the face behind the Pen, they would instantly turn on the Featheringtons and strip them of their last remaining dregs of self-respect. Fortunately, Penelope’s secret is safe as of the Season 2 finale, although it’s not clear if Eloise intends to reveal her last-minute realization. Lady Whistledown is known for her candor, her wit, and, perhaps most importantly, her utter disregard for the maudlin machinations of her society.

5Nigel Berbrooke Has An Illegitimate Child With One Of His Maids

Nigel Berbrooke is angry in Season 1 of Bridgerton.

Anthony insists on forging an alliance between the Berbrookes and the Bridgertons, consequently ordering Daphne to accept Nigel’s marriage offer. His sister has no intentions of getting married in the first place, least of all to a man as objectionable as Nigel Berbrooke. Despite her clear disinterest in his attempts to woo her, he forces himself on Daphne — she promptly knocks him unconscious.

In fact, the only reason she makes her deal with Simon Basset is to keep Nigel at bay. Anthony accepts her version of the story and dissuades Nigel, but the latter brazenly produces a marriage license for him and Daphne. Fortunately for the Bridgertons, Lady Whistledown publishes the story of Nigel Berbrooke’s illegitimate affair with one of his maids, after which he is forced to flee for good. Everyone in Regency Era London loves a good secret lovechild story.

4The Truth Behind Marina Thompson’s Hurried Engagement To Colin Bridgerton

Colin Bridgerton and Marina Thompson from Bridgerton.

Marina Crane née Thompson shifts from her home in the country to the Featherington mansion in Mayfair, where she quickly becomes the talk of the ton. Portia is noticeably uncomfortable with her presence, as she believes Marina’s beauty would hamper her daughters’ chances of finding a prospective groom. Lady Whistledown initially states that Marina is the real Incomparable of the season, boldly defying the Queen’s own declaration.

However, Marina’s unexpected pregnancy throws a wrench into her plans. She begins pining for George Crane, her paramour and the father of her child, but Portia and Mrs. Varley concoct the perfect scheme to discourage her. Marina’s engagement to Colin Bridgerton would have been the high point of her life, had it not been upstaged by a jealous Penelope. As Lady Whistledown, she exposes Marina’s pregnancy to the world, effectively ending any hopes of marriage to Colin.

3Daphne & Simon’s Courtship, Engagement, Marriage, And Privacy In General

Daphne and Simon

Daphne and Simon’s love story is the focal center of Brigerton‘s first season, so it’s natural that their movements and actions would be carefully watched by the entire ton. Lady Whistledown is no different — she publishes details about their courtship, engagement, and marriage because she knows how to captivate her reader base.

Simon and Daphne’s relationship is called “the most remarkable coup of the season,” with the gossip columnist promising to “reveal the circumstances of the match.” Lady Whistledown later says that Daphne should leave her betrothed for the charming Prince Friedrich, implying Simon’s apparent lack of enthusiasm. Finally, Whistledown discusses the possibility of a little baby Duke, stating that Daphne and Simon’s “time is officially up.”

2The Morbid Yet Ambiguous Details Of The Anthony-Kate-Edwina Triangle

Kathani and Mary Sharma arrive in London with only one goal in mind: finding a suitable suitor for Edwina. The latter is delighted at the prospect of marriage, and pleasantly agrees with most of her sister’s expectations. That is, until her attraction to Anthony Bridgerton blossoms into a minor crush and, eventually, full-fledged infatuation. Unbeknownst to Edwina, Anthony and Kate have been locked in a love-hate relationship for a long time, which inevitably prevents him from upholding his promises.

Lady Whistledown doesn’t know much about their relationship, but she nevertheless makes pointed comments concerning Anthony’s affection for Edwina. Interestingly, Whistledown claims that “any suitor wishing to gain an audience with Miss Edwina Sharma must first tame the rather prickly spinster of a beast, otherwise known as her sister. After Edwina “jilts” Anthony at the altar, Whistledown shapes the story into a veritable scandal and unleashes it on the ton.

1Whistledown Destroys Eloise’s Reputation By Revealing Her Dalliance With Theo Sharpe

Eloise and Theo in the print shop in Season 2 of Bridgerton.

The women’s rights movement of Regency Era London was inspired by the era-defining piece of literature titled A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) and its author, the iconic Mary Wollstonecraft. Eloise is excited to be a part of the campaign and attends speeches and rallies by working-class people, where they discuss “radical” ideas like women’s education.

Penelope begs her not to drag the Bridgerton name through the mud, mainly because she doesn’t want Eloise to uncover her identity. Unfortunately, Queen Charlotte mistakenly assumes Eloise to be the real Lady Whistledown and threatens her with dire consequences. In order to protect her friend (and herself), Penelope destroys Eloise’s reputation by exposing her dalliance with Theo Sharpe to the entire ton.
