This has been driving me insane
Adolescence has been a massive hit for Netflix. Truly a phenomenon that will go down as one of the biggest shows of 2025 – and a powerhouse of British drama. The limited series tells the story of how an ordinary family are turned upside down after their 13 year old son Jamie is arrested on suspicion of murdering his female classmate – and stars Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters as Jamie’s father and the DCI investigating respectfully. Adolescence sees Stephen Graham working with director Philip Barantini – who he worked with on Boiling Point. Barantini used his one shot trademark style again in Adolescence – and there’s one particular window moment in the Netflix show that had everyone pondering how on earth they managed it.
Not that cameras can’t blast through windows of course, but in the one take setup of Adolescence on Netflix, how on earth can the window moment be done? It looked wild, but thankfully Netflix has given an explanation of how they achieved it.
It was technical magic
Netflix has done some very insightful Q&A sessions discussing how Adolescence pulled off certain tricks and feats in production. When asked about that window that had literally eluded everyone, the answer on how the team pulled it off was as follows:
“There wasn’t actually a window there. It was taken out and put back in using VFX. One of the camera operators was in the classroom, then when Ryan jumped out of the window, the other operator – who was crouching on the other side – took the camera and continued the chase.”
So when Ryan jumped out the window there was another guy waiting on the other side of the frame seamlessly picked up the camera and chased after Ryan.
Crazy how good visual effects are these days because it honestly looks unclockable from real glass. We’ve come a long way since Jaws 3. If you know you know.
