Jason Lee is weighing in on the viral Met Gala moment involving Rihanna and Tyla, and he’s making it clear whose side he’s on. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Page Six Radio, Lee criticized Tyla’s reaction to the now-infamous exchange with Rihanna, arguing that the entire situation spiraled because of misplaced expectations and social media overanalysis.

The controversy began after Tyla shared details of an awkward interaction she had with Rihanna at the 2026 Met Gala. In a TikTok video, the South African star explained that she attempted to greet Rihanna—whom she has publicly described as an idol—but the conversation ended quickly when Rihanna reportedly mentioned that her “baby daddy” was calling before walking away.

Tyla later admitted the moment caught her off guard and felt awkward, which immediately fueled online speculation about tension between the two artists.

Lee, however, pushed back hard against the narrative that Rihanna intentionally snubbed Tyla. Speaking with hosts Danny Murphy and Evan Real, he argued that Rihanna’s life and responsibilities likely made the interaction far less personal than the internet turned it into.

“She’s not a mean girl,” Lee said of Rihanna, adding that the billionaire artist is focused on family, business, and motherhood rather than celebrity drama.

He also pointed to Rihanna’s demanding schedule leading into the Met Gala, noting that she had recently traveled internationally and was juggling multiple responsibilities at once. Lee said the idea that Rihanna was deliberately ignoring Tyla lacked perspective.

“You think she’s there thinking about you?” he said during the interview. “That lack of self-awareness that you’re not the biggest thing in the world.”

He also referenced Rihanna allowing Tyla to work with celebrity hairstylist Yusef, suggesting there had already been goodwill between them before the viral moment.

The discussion quickly expanded into a larger conversation about celebrity culture and expectations at high-profile events like the Met Gala. Lee compared the situation to previous online fan-fueled feuds and argued that social media amplified a brief interaction into a controversy that overshadowed the event itself.

He also referenced comments from Anna Wintour about Rihanna’s iconic status at the Met Gala, calling Rihanna “the Met” while criticizing the online backlash directed at her.

Since the clip went viral, Tyla has clarified that she never intended to start a feud and still admires Rihanna. She later explained that the encounter simply happened at a chaotic moment during one of fashion’s biggest nights.
