Although the fighter’s promoter confirmed the fight, some time later this was denied
In the early hours of Tuesday, the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Cuban William Scull was seemingly announced, according to AGON Sports, the promoter that represents the Caribbean super middleweight fighter.
However, a few hours later, it was confirmed that the fight was cancelled for good, despite the fact that Scull (22-0, 9 KOs) was the mandatory challenger by the International Boxing Federation (IBF).
AGON Sports said that an agreement had been reached with Canelo and his team, but they did not know if he was the Mexican’s immediate opponent.
Some time later, The Ring confirmed that the fight was canceled, the same information that Michael Benson, a journalist specialized in boxing, shared on social media.
Canelo’s next fight in September
Likewise, The Ring confirmed that Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs), is still working on the terms of his next fight at 168 pounds, and it is expected to be held in September, as Mexico celebrates its independence on the 16th.
The fight between the Mexican and the Cuban was ordered last May 13, and the negotiation period was stopped just nine days later.
AGON Sports informed the IBF that there was no agreement between both parties and requested the offer, since the rules of said body establish that either party can request a purse bid at any time during negotiations.
The Ring explained that the decision to go directly to a hearing is normally exercised when it is understood that an agreement cannot be reached.
Alvarez has yet to make a mandatory defense for the WBA or IBF titles. In fact, he was mandatory as a secondary WBA champion when he faced and defeated Callum Smith in his December 2020 WBA title unification fight.
Benavidez and his role as Canelo’s challenger
On the other hand, the David Benavidez isn’t letting his guard down and maintains his desire to face Canelo.
Benavidez announced that he will sign the letter of appeal that leaves him as the official and mandatory challenger by the WBC for the super middleweight title held by Canelo.
