The Umbrella Academy teased two mysterious characters named Jean and Gene in the first episode of season 4, raising questions about who they could be. After three successful seasons with many twists, turns, and shocking reveals, The Umbrella Academy is ending with its fourth season. Following the cliffhanger ending of The Umbrella Academy season 3, the final episodes are expected to address the many loose ends left so far and solve the biggest mysteries of the show – and for that, season 4 is bringing new characters that could be of great help to the Hargreeves.
The Umbrella Academy season 3 saw Reginald creating his own timeline, which almost killed all the Hargreeves (and Lila) except Allison, as he had a deal with her. Allison killed Reginald at the last minute, saving her siblings, but that didn’t stop the new timeline from happening. In it, the Hargreeves and Lila no longer have their powers, Sloane is missing, and Allison has her daughter and her 1960s husband. The biggest questions for The Umbrella Academy season 4 are how the Hargreeves will regain their powers and how the timeline will be fixed, and Jean and Gene might be key to these.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4’s Jean & Gene Could Be Connected To The Commission
Jean & Gene Hint At A Connection To The Commission

The official Twitter account for The Umbrella Academy shared a page from season 4’s first episode, starring three unknown characters named Eddy, Jean, and Gene.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 is set for an August 8, 2024, release, and at the time of writing, only a very brief look at it, along with character posters, has been revealed. On May 8, 2024, the official Twitter account for The Umbrella Academy shared a page from season 4’s first episode. The protagonists of the scene are three unknown characters named Eddy, Jean, and Gene. Eddy is some sort of illegal seller of various items from different timelines, while Jean and Gene, a married couple, introduce themselves as Dr. Jean and Dr. Gene Thibedeau.
Although the script doesn’t offer physical descriptions of Jean and Gene, they sound a lot like The Commission’s agents.
Jean is excited to find two VHS tapes of a movie titled Love On Loan, which are identical except for one key difference: one features an unidentified movie star, and the other features Allison Hargreeves, with the script noting that it’s Allison from season 1. Although the script doesn’t offer physical descriptions of Jean and Gene, they sound a lot like The Commission’s agents. The Umbrella Academy season 3 revealed The Commission had been destroyed, so Jean and Gene could be the last agents standing.
Jean and Gene looking for items from different timelines, like the VHS tapes, could be their effort to put some order back into the timeline now that The Commission is no longer around. Of course, it’s also possible that Jean and Gene are unrelated to The Commission and have other reasons for collecting these items, either for mere fun or for other purposes that could be of great help to the Hargreeves.
How Jean & Gene Can Help The Hargreeves Return To Their Timeline
Jean & Gene Are Aware Of A Multiverse In The Umbrella Academy

Their awareness of the multiverse could be of help to the Hargreeves to either undo Reginald’s timeline or return to one where their presence won’t cause yet another apocalypse.
Jean and Gene are aware of a multiverse in The Umbrella Academy as hinted by their reaction to the VHS tapes, but it’s unknown how much they know about it and if they have any power or object in their possession that allows them to travel through space and time. Still, their awareness of it could be of help to the Hargreeves to either undo Reginald’s timeline or return to one where their presence won’t cause yet another apocalypse.
If Jean and Gene are linked to The Commission, they can not only rebuild the organization with a better purpose but it will be easier to relocate the Hargreeves in the multiverse. Finding a new timeline for the Hargreeves can also be the key to regaining their powers, so Jean and Gene might have a much more important role in The Umbrella Academy season 4 than it seems – or, at least, they will serve to introduce viewers to the multiverse.
