Ahh, Bridgerton – Netflix’s holiday gift to the masses. When it’s cold and gloomy outside, and the country is under strict stay-at-home orders, a frothy, sexy period drama is just what the doctor ordered. Bridgerton debuted to more than a little fanfare – at the time of writing, the show was ranked number one in the UK on Netflix.

It’s easy to see why. The show, based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling novels, features a beautiful (and much-applauded, racially diverse) cast, oodles of dating drama, and plenty of delicious costumes to look at. The series takes place over the social season in Regency London, so viewers can expect the delights of many a candlelit ballroom dancing scene. Which is precisely the kind of escapism we need to take us away from our one-bed-flat, where we are working from home, and decidedly not wearing ball gowns.

The empire-waisted gowns are undeniably pretty – maybe not in a “that’s what I’m wearing on my next date” way, but in a fantasy way that takes our imaginations back to another era in fashion history. The show had an astonishing 232 costume department crew members to create all the lavish looks. There were 123 garments created for Daphne alone!
