‘Nemesis’ ends on a bang with a shocking cliffhanger and striking decision

The finale of Nemesis leaves viewers with plenty of intriguing questions.

From the mind of Power co-creator Courtney A. Kemp, Nemesis isn’t your average cops-and-robbers show as it mixes familial, generational trauma and drama with rip-roaring action and twists at every turn. Overzealous, determined police officer Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Law) lost his police partner two years ago and realizes that allegedly-reformed criminal and businessman Coltrane Wilder (Y’lan Noel) may be the mastermind behind it.

The two get involved in an epic cat-and-mouse chase, as Coltrane brings Isaiah’s former gangster father Amos (Moe Irvin) into his robbery plans. Coltrane eventually kills Amos, which Isaiah’s son Noah (Cedric Joe) witnesses, but Isaiah is framed, leading to a shocking conclusion.

Once police discover Isaiah’s suspicions about Coltrane had validity, Coltrane and his wife Ebony (Cleopatra Coleman) try to flee the country. Isaiah initially promises his son, Noah, that he will kill Coltrane to stop him from doing it, and calls in a favor from a drug cartel, but once his family is in danger too, it may be too late to stop them.

All of season 1’s drama comes to a head in Nemesis’s finale as Isaiah and Coltrane meet with Noah’s life on the line.

How did Nemesis end?

Just like the rest of the show, Nemesis ends with plenty of twists and turns as the episode begins with Noah on the run after witnessing Coltrane murder Amos. Police put out an arrest warrant for Coltrane after finding video footage revealing Detective Harper (Stephanie Sigman) was working with him, and gave Coltrane Isaiah’s confiscated gun to murder Amos.

Ebony is arrested on murder charges when revealing to Isaiah’s wife Candace (Gabrielle Dennis) that she can stop Noah from being killed. Ebony chooses to get the hit on Noah called off as Isaiah finds his son — who intended on killing Coltrane — and gets him not to, ensuring he’ll kill him instead.

Isaiah calls on the Alvarez cartel for a favor to kill Coltrane as Ebony’s criminal sister Charlie (Sophina Brown) changes Detective Harper’s target from Noah to Coltrane. Amid their search for Coltrane, the cartel accidentally takes Candace hostage, thinking she’s Ebony as Ebony is also injured from the pursuit, ending up in police custody in the hospital.

Coltrane creates a distraction to rescue Ebony as he is pursued by the cartel, Noah, Isaiah and the LAPD, which leads to Noah getting shot by the cartel. Coltrane helps keep Noah alive as Isaiah must decide to let Coltrane escape and save his son or pursue Coltrane, abandoning Noah.

What happens to Coltrane at the end of Nemesis?

Coltrane escapes trouble at every turn in the finale episode. Always wearing his bulletproof vest, Coltrane goes to a spot to meet Ebony, but is shot from afar by Detective Harper.

Harper thinks he’s dead, but Coltrane jumps up as the two have a knife fight and Coltrane kills her. Coltrane then goes to rescue Ebony from the cartel, but finds out she’s at the hospital, subsequently calling Charlie to come up with a plan to get Ebony out of police custody there.

Coltrane creates a distraction as Isaiah and the LAPD pursue him along with the cartel and Noah. He escapes to a back alley as Noah finds him and holds him at gunpoint.

Coltrane ultimately gives a speech to Noah about how he can be a better man than both him and Isaiah if he doesn’t murder him, which speaks to Noah. After Noah is shot by the cartel while they try to kill Coltrane, Isaiah kills the cartel members, and sees Coltrane keeping his son from bleeding out.

Coltrane makes Isaiah an offer that if he lets him go, he’ll let Noah live and Isaiah takes the offer. “You were never going to win,” Coltrane says as he hops over the fence and seemingly escapes.

What happened to Isaiah and why did he let Coltrane escape?

Isaiah is wearing an ankle monitor at the episode’s start after being suspended for unorthodox practices in attempting to capture Coltrane, but he takes it off to go find Noah.

After promising that he’ll kill Coltrane so Noah doesn’t, he asks the Alvarez cartel to do it.

Isaiah is also exonerated as it becomes clear that Coltrane was every bit the criminal Isaiah said he was. Commissioner James Sealey (Michael Potts) even tells Isaiah that all of his overzealous and unconventional tactics appear more like good police work than overstepping his bounds.

Once Isaiah is back on the force, he tries to call off the hit from the cartel on Coltrane, but it’s too late as a daytime shootout takes place. Correctly believing Isaiah would eventually want to arrest Coltrane rather than kill him, Noah attempts to take matters into his own hands.

As Coltrane makes his offer to let Isaiah save his son if he gets to escape, Isaiah flashes back to all the people who have died or been injured in his pursuit of Coltrane. Isaiah decides to let Coltrane go and put pressure on Noah’s wound to keep him alive after being shot.

Where do Isaiah and Candace stand?

Isaiah and Candace’s marriage ends up as one of Nemesis’ big loose ends. During the finale, the cartel accidentally kidnaps Candace thinking she is Ebony in a ploy to lure Coltrane to them.

Coltrane kills six cartel members while attempting to rescue his wife and tells Candace it was Isaiah who called the cartel to kill Coltrane, leaving her with plenty of questions about her husband. Not sure she’s safe with Isaiah, she goes to Malik Jacobson’s (Jeff Pierre) house, telling him she wondered if she should have married him instead and appears to sleep with him.

Candace is last seen questioning her decision, unsure whether she and Isaiah can repair their issues. The cliffhanger leaves questions as to whether Isaiah saving Noah will bring him closer with Candace or further away because their son was injured.

Where do Ebony and Coltrane stand?

Charlie is faithful to her sister Ebony and gets some of her connections to pose as doctors in the hospital where Ebony is being held.

As Coltrane provides a distraction by coming into the hospital, Charlie’s assailants drug a doctor and get Ebony out, also dressed as a doctor, where she ends up in an ambulance with Charlie.

Charlie tells Ebony she’d do anything for her and also has a way to free Coltrane. The couple end the season still in love with confirmation that Ebony is pregnant and leaving the country, hoping Coltrane can meet her.

Will there be a Nemesis season 2?

There is plenty of material for a season 2 of Nemesis. Does Noah live? Does Coltrane make it out alive? What happens to Isaiah and Candace’s marriage?

The game of cat and mouse between Isaiah and Coltrane isn’t over as Isaiah must see if he can save his son’s life and his marriage. He’s just gotten his job back on the force and there’s the question of whether anyone will find out that he ordered the cartel hit on Coltrane.

Isaiah is clearly still in pursuit of Coltrane and the criminal mastermind still has the cartel after him, too, but Netflix has yet to confirm a Nemesis season 2.
