‘The Four Seasons’ Season 2 Ending Explained and How it Sets Up Season 3

From Danny and Claude’s major life decisions to Kate and Jack’s emotional marathon, we break down how Netflix’s ‘The Four Seasons’ Season 2 wraps up.

So much transpired between core friends Kate (Tina Fey), Jack (Will Forte), Danny (Colman Domingo), Claude (Marco Calvani), Anne (Kerri Kenney-Silver), and Ginny (Erika Henningsen) in The Four Seasons‘ second season. Not even the power of Vivaldi can match the marital and personal drama that erupted among them following Nick’s (Steve Carell) passing.

This season expands beyond the Alan Alda feature it’s based on, taking the friends from domestic vacation homes all the way to Claude’s hometown in Italy by the finale. So, what happened with each couple—or pairing—by the end of The Four Seasons Season 2? Let’s break it down.

Claude and Danny Move to Italy…until.

Claude and Danny face numerous tribulations this season, each life choice more definitive than the last. They briefly look for surrogates to start a family but eventually drop the plan.

Come Thanksgiving, Danny decides to move to Italy with Claude—much to Kate’s dismay and disbelief. But he follows through, feeling the weight of Claude’s 16‑year sacrifice living in America to be with him and stay close to his own family. Now it’s Danny’s turn to give back.

However, in the finale, Danny learns his mother (Vernée Watson) had a fall and needs family support. He visits her in her time of need and tries to convince her to move with them to Europe. Despite his hardest pleas, she kindly refuses. Claude overhears and makes the executive decision: they will stay in America to care for Danny’s mom, moving into her upstairs.

Kate & Jack learn to open up

Throughout the season, Kate and Jack—a couple prone to marital mishaps—try their own solo ventures, all of which blow up in their faces and worsen their already poor communication. Kate’s plan to start a B&B with Danny falls apart when Danny moves to Italy with Claude. Meanwhile, Jack sprains his ankle after kicking a turkey on Thanksgiving (making a scene out of frustration), which derails his yearlong training for a marathon.

But in the final episode, during a holiday visit to Danny and Claude in Italy, Kate encourages Jack to run an impromptu marathon. Kilometers metric over miles be damned. When he tries to give up from exhaustion, Kate runs alongside him. Together, as they push toward the finish line, they finally open up about their fears and what’s been driving them apart. They cross the finish line together, celebrating by sitting on a bench and professing their love. It’s as they say, the couple that runs a marathon together, stays together.

Anne and Ginny become besties

Across the year without Nick, Anne tries to find her spirit again. She grows close to Ginny, Nick’s surviving girlfriend who now has his child, Gino. Anne provides a home and support during Ginny’s first few months of motherhood. But when Anne tries to restart her life as “Anne 2.0,” she keeps finding herself trapped in her grief—one episode flashes back to a pandemic Thanksgiving, bringing back Carrell’s Nick for a single episode. Also there she learns he was cheating on her, long before meeting Ginny and their subsequent divorce.

In the finale, while in Italy, Anne lies to her one-night summer hookup Mark (Steven Pasquale) about living in Italy and having a new boyfriend named Gianpiero—this after Mark reveals he’s found a new girlfriend. When Mark shuts her down, Anne reflects on her heavy year and feels defeated. But Ginny affirms her, insisting that the classic Anne did a great job being a wonderful person that year.

The evolution of Anne and Ginny’s friendship is the season’s best element. The heartwarming chemistry between Kerri Kenney-Silver and Erika Henningsen is enough to bring one to tears.

Anne gets her groove back?

With Danny and Claude deciding to stay in America, Anne decides to stay in Italy and housesit for them, and have her own new adventure.

Right as Kate and Jack leave back home, Anne has a meet-cute with a dashing man who has been receiving her mail, only for his name to be Gianpiero. And the person portraying him is none other than the Tenth Doctor himself, David Tennant.

What does this leave for Season 3?

We are to probably expect Tennant to join the couple group as Gianpiero. Anne will have a brand new man, and we’ll see how their budding relationship prospers. Move out of the way, Emily in Paris, it’s Anne in Italy. What would the Italian experience look like for Anne when she goes back to America? Will Gianpiero come to America, too? How will he fit into the rest of the core group’s dynamic? Hopefully, we’ll find out if and when The Four Seasons season 3 gets renewed. More on its renewal chances in the weeks to come.
