The likely cause of the crash that tragically killed 28-year-old Liverpool soccer star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva has been revealed.

The soccer star and his brother died at the scene of the fiery crash in their Lamborghini on July 3.

“In the absence of a conclusion of the experts evidence, everything points that a car left the road, due to a tire blowout while overtaking,” Spanish police told NBC News in a statement. They said that both occupants of the vehicle died when the car caught fire.

A source from the Government Sub-delegation in Zamora, Spain, indicated the crash is being investigated as “a possible speeding incident,” CNN reported.

Meanwhile, heartbroken family and friends gathered at a church in Portugal for the brothers’ wake on July 4.

Jota and Silva died after their car “veered off a road and burst into flames” near the Spanish town of Zamora, according to the Associated Press.

Spanish police told AP earlier that they “were investigating the causes of the accident that occurred past midnight local time.” The police said there were “no other vehicles involved” and the brothers were the only people in the vehicle.

Tragically, Jota was married late last month and his final Instagram photos and video showed his wedding to his wife, Rute Cardoso.

According to NBC News, Jota was only 28 years old and his younger brother, Silva, also a professional soccer player, was just 25.

“On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players, respectively, performed. The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to observe a minute of silence this Thursday before our National Team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship,” concluded the post.

“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily.”

REVEALED: CCTV Picks Up Diogo Jota’s Brother Reaching for the Brake 0.6 Seconds Before the Front Tyre Exploded

The tragic car crash that claimed the lives of Liverpool FC star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva on July 3, 2025, has taken a haunting new turn with the release of previously undisclosed CCTV footage. Captured on Spain’s A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, Zamora, the footage reveals André Silva, seated in the passenger seat of their Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder, reaching for the brake pedal just 0.6 seconds before the front tire exploded. In that fleeting moment, André’s voice is heard yelling, “HOLD ON!”—a desperate cry that underscores the split-second horror before the supercar veered off the road, flipped, and burst into flames. For even the world’s best driver, 0.6 seconds was not enough to avert disaster. This article explores the new evidence, its implications for the ongoing investigation, and the profound grief that continues to grip the football world.

The Final Moments

The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. as Diogo, 28, and André, 25, traveled eastward on the A-52, heading to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK. Diogo, advised against flying due to recent minor lung surgery, was returning for Liverpool’s pre-season training. The brothers were driving a Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder, a £180,000 supercar capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and reaching speeds over 325 km/h. CCTV footage previously revealed the car hitting 100 km/h in under 3.4 seconds while overtaking another vehicle, a testament to its blistering power.

The newly released CCTV clip, obtained by Spanish authorities and described in reports by Marca and El País, provides a chilling glimpse into the moments before the crash. The footage, recorded from a traffic camera, shows André, in the passenger seat, suddenly reaching toward the driver’s footwell, likely attempting to press the brake pedal. This action occurred just 0.6 seconds before the front tire exploded, causing the car to yaw violently and skid off the road. The audio, picked up by an onboard or nearby microphone, captures André’s shout of “HOLD ON!”—a warning that came too late as the Lamborghini smashed through a guardrail, flipped multiple times, and erupted into a fireball, igniting surrounding vegetation.

The Significance of 0.6 Seconds

The revelation of André’s attempt to brake and his shouted warning has stunned crash investigators and automotive experts. Dr. Elena Torres, a forensic crash analyst consulted by Cadena SER, explained, “At high speeds, 0.6 seconds is an eternity in human reaction time but utterly insufficient for a vehicle traveling potentially above 200 km/h. Even an expert driver would struggle to counteract a front tire blowout in that timeframe.” The Huracán’s electronic stability control (ESC) is designed to mitigate such incidents, but a front tire explosion at extreme velocity can overwhelm even advanced systems, causing instantaneous loss of control.

The 71-metre skid mark reported earlier, stretching over half the length of a football pitch, aligns with the CCTV evidence. The skid began in the right lane, veering toward a safety grass patch, suggesting the driver—presumed to be Diogo—attempted to steer away from danger as André reached for the brake. The shout of “HOLD ON!” indicates André may have sensed an issue, perhaps a vibration or noise from the tire, moments before the catastrophic failure. However, the 0.6-second window left no margin for recovery, underscoring the brutal physics of high-speed crashes.

Unanswered Questions

The new footage raises critical questions about the crash’s cause. Spanish Guardia Civil investigators, led by provincial traffic head Alfonso Ibáñez, initially attributed the accident to a tire blowout during an overtaking maneuver. The identification of the front tire as the point of failure adds complexity, as front tire blowouts are particularly destabilizing, causing sudden understeer that can pivot the car uncontrollably. Experts are now probing whether the tire failure was due to a manufacturing defect, improper maintenance, road debris, or the A-52’s notorious potholes, which have been linked to multiple accidents, including 19 in 2023 alone.

The Lamborghini’s black box data, currently under analysis, may clarify the vehicle’s speed and system performance. Earlier reports suggested the car was traveling well above the A-52’s 120 km/h speed limit, with estimates based on the skid mark ranging from 140–150 km/h. The Huracán’s history of recalls, including a 2024 notice for a defective crash safety bracket, has also prompted scrutiny, though no direct link to the tire failure has been established. The possibility of a steering or suspension fault, which could explain André’s desperate brake attempt, remains under investigation.

André’s action itself is puzzling. As a passenger, reaching for the brake pedal is an instinctive but futile gesture, as only the driver can effectively operate it. Dr. Torres speculated, “It’s possible André reacted to a visual or auditory cue—a sudden swerve or tire noise—prompting a reflex to intervene. His shout suggests he knew disaster was imminent.” The audio of “HOLD ON!” has become a heart-wrenching symbol of the brothers’ final moments, echoing reports of André’s scream amid the wreckage.

The Football World’s Grief

The tragedy, occurring just 11 days after Diogo’s wedding to Rute Cardoso, has left an indelible mark on the football community. Diogo, a key figure in Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League triumph and Portugal’s Nations League victories, scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds. André, a professional footballer for Penafiel FC, was a rising star with 12 goals in 105 matches. Their funeral in Gondomar on July 5 drew thousands, including Liverpool stars and Portugal coach Roberto Martinez. Rute’s whispered three words into Diogo’s coffin, captured by a microphone, remain a private testament to their love.

Tributes continue to pour in. Liverpool’s Arne Slot called Diogo “a friend to everyone,” while Cristiano Ronaldo wrote, “It doesn’t make sense.” Fans have left flowers, scarves, and a PlayStation controller—a nod to Diogo’s gaming passion—at Anfield and the Diogo Jota Academy in Gondomar. The Portuguese Football Federation declared, “We have lost two champions,” pledging to honor the brothers’ legacy.

A Call for Answers

The CCTV footage has intensified calls for a thorough investigation. The A-52’s reputation as a “treacherous” road, with its high-speed bends and history of accidents, has drawn criticism. If a road hazard or vehicle defect contributed to the tire failure, it could prompt regulatory changes or recalls. For now, the focus remains on the black box data and forensic Roswell tire marks, expected to provide a detailed speed estimate within days.

The 0.6-second window and André’s cry of “HOLD ON!” encapsulate the tragedy’s suddenness—a fleeting moment of hope against insurmountable odds. As the investigation continues, the football world mourns two brothers whose lives ended in a flash, their legacy enduring through the love of their family, teammates, and fans.
