‘It was just flesh and bone’: US teen recounts losing hand and leg in shark attack
American Lulu Gribbon was just 15 years old when she was attacked in 2024 at a beach in Florida.
As Australia grapples with a recent spate of shark attacks, one American teenager who lost her hand and leg in a devastating attack has turned her trauma into a powerful mission to save lives.
Lulu Gribbon was just 15 years old when she was attacked on June 7, 2024, while swimming during a beach trip with her mother in Florida.
On Sunrise on Thursday, the teenager said she remembers almost every moment of the terrifying ordeal, with one exception – she can’t remember the pain of the shark’s teeth piercing her skin.
“I just remember raising my arm out of the water, and there was just no hand there, and it was just flesh and bone,” Lulu told Sunrise.
“I remember the shark latching onto my leg, but I could never feel anything, and I was so grateful for that.”
The attack resulted in the loss of her left hand and severe injuries to her right leg, which was later amputated.
Now 17, Lulu has transformed her recovery into action, launching a campaign she hopes will prevent others from suffering the same fate.
Her proposal, known as “Lulu’s Law,” would introduce an alert system sending real-time notifications to beachgoers’ phones when a shark attack occurs in nearby waters.
“Before my shark attack occurred, there was another shark attack before me,” she said.
“The goal is to make the beaches safe and to allow the people on the beach to feel safe.”
Alongside the proposed alert system, Lulu is also launching the Lulu Strong Foundation, aimed at funding research into prosthetics, emerging technology, and improving the quality of life for amputees.
Her story comes as New South Wales endures a devastating period of shark activity, with four attacks occurring in 48 hours.
