A horrific multi-vehicle collision involving six semi-trailers occurred on the Hume Highway, one of Australia’s busiest freeways, triggering massive explosions and completely paralyzing traffic. The accident took place just after 5:00 AM on Tuesday at Breadalbane, southwest of Goulburn in New South Wales (NSW). Initially, two trucks collided heavily while turning into a roadside rest stop, subsequently losing control and plowing directly into four other rigs parked at the site. The impact sparked a massive fire accompanied by a series of consecutive explosions, forcing authorities to urgently shut down the vital transit route connecting Sydney and the capital city of Canberra.
Despite the catastrophic scene engulfed in thick smoke and towering flames, the NSW Police Force later provided a highly relieved update, confirming that an initially unaccounted-for driver had been found safe. NSW Police Acting Inspector Vladimir Mijok remarked that it was “nothing short of a miracle” that all six drivers managed to escape their cabins in time without sustaining any serious injuries. Paramedics treated all six individuals at the scene for minor injuries, and two of the truck drivers were transported to Goulburn Base Hospital to undergo mandatory testing.
A spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW stated that the blaze intensified rapidly due to the tons of highly flammable materials being transported by the vehicles. Specifically, one of the trucks was carrying eight tonnes of butane cans, another was transporting resin, a third contained memory foam, and a fourth was packed with alcohol. Due to the complex nature of the crash, a specialized crash investigation unit has established a crime scene to determine the exact cause of the collision.
