Slasher icon and Scream star Neve Campbell has revealed details regarding her role in the upcoming sequel, Scream 7. While Campbell was not expected to return for the seventh outing, after all manner of drama behind the scenes, she has now confirmed she will lead the follow-up, with Campbell also teasing the return of original stars Patrick Dempsey and Courteney Cox.

“We are going to follow Sidney. They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board.”

While plot details remain under wraps, we can likely assume that Campbell’s Sidney Prescott will have spent the last few years preparing for the return of Ghostface, ala Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode in the Halloween legacy sequel. Of course, even with all that preparation and training, it’s still plenty scary when that masked killer comes a-knocking.

Discussing the horror movie further with ET, Campbell revealed that she has not yet received a completed script, but expects she will soon. She also took the time to heap praise on the Scream fandom, calling them “incredible.”

“I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades…The fandom is nuts, they are incredible and very passionate about these films. I’m excited to give them a new one!”

Scream 7 Has Suffered Behind the Scenes

While Neve Campbell did return to the slasher series in 2022’s Scream, she was not involved in 2023’s Scream VI. Much to the disappointment of fans. The actress has since revealed why she did not come back for another round with Ghostface, speaking publicly about how her salary offer was not enough considering she is both the lead of the Scream franchise and the main legacy star. Thankfully, she was eventually heard by the studio, Spyglass Media Group, and says she is “super grateful” and glad she “stood up” for herself.

“I’m super grateful that they came around on it. [Scream VI] just didn’t feel right. I couldn’t after this many decades of carrying a franchise, to feel undervalued and underpaid and to know that it wouldn’t have happened to a man in that way. It just wouldn’t make sense for me to walk on that set. So, I’m glad I stood up for myself.”

Despite the success of both Scream and Scream 6, getting Scream 7 to the screen has proven surprisingly difficult. The initial idea was to continue to carve out a new era and once again center on sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, respectively. However, the slasher sequel has now been completely reworked and rewritten after Barrera was dropped following comments she made on social media regarding the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

Writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick have since crafted “a fresh draft to present to filmmakers,” reports claim, with director Christopher Landon of Happy Death Day fame having also been hired before walking away from the project and calling the movie “a dream job that turned into a nightmare.”

Not long after Berrera was let go, Jenna Ortega also revealed that she would not return for Scream 7, with reports citing scheduling conflicts with the Netflix series Wednesday and a dispute over salary as the reason.

Scream 7 is expected to be released in 2025.
