Netflix remaking classic tale ‘we think we know’ with The Housemaid star

Expected to release this year it comes from Netflix studio that made its most popular film ever

Some big name stars have been confirmed for Netflix’s next huge remake.

The streaming giant has confirmed that it is working on its own version of a classic fairy tale. While the Disney version of Cinderella, both its animated and live action versions, are more widely recognised, the company is adding its own unique twist.

Netflix asks audiences that if they think they know Cinderella’s ‘evil’ stepsisters then they should think again. New film, called Steps, will take a whole new approach to the familiar story.

The title is the latest offering from Netflix’s original slate of animated films, following on from the most popular Netflix film ever, KPop Demon Hunters; Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio; and Academy Award–nominated Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl to name just a few.

A release date is yet to be confirmed but it is expected to release sometime this year. The Housemaid star Amanda Seyfried has been cast as Cinderella, alongside Hocus Pocus legend Bette Midler as the Fairy Godmother.

Meanwhile Beef star Ali Wong and Everything Everywhere All At Once star Stephanie Hsu also feature as the stepsisters. According to the synopsis shared by Netflix, sick of living in Cinderella’s shadow, Lilith steals the Fairy Godmother magic wand.

She hijacks the Royal Ball with her sister Margot, breaking the Cinderella story as we know it and dooming the kingdom to the tyrannical rule of Priscilla, a villainous schemer who swoops in and snatches the throne.

Now, Lilith must team up with Cinderella to fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods on an epic quest to save the kingdom, but most importantly, their relationship.

It will be directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa. Ripa previously helmed Raya and the Last Dragon while Tzue is making their feature directorial debut.

She has also spoken out about what the Mamma Mia star is bringing to the role. She told the Tudum website: “Amanda has this incredible ability to make her characters specific and relatable, and we absolutely needed that when taking on a character that’s as legendary as Cinderella.

“We wanted to create a modern heroine complete with flaws and coping mechanisms, and Amanda immediately understood the task. Her portrayal of Cinderella is hilarious and heartbreaking and, most importantly, refreshingly human.”

Steps is streaming on Netflix soon in 2026.
