Lace up your sneakers, because we are heading back to the court! During the 2026 Netflix Upfronts presentation in New York today, the streamer officially announced that Mindy Kalingâs basketball comedy Running Point has been renewed for a third season.
Fans of the LA Waves can finally exhale. Ever since Season 2 dropped in late April 2026, weâve been keeping a close eye on the showâs performance, especially after a somewhat rocky sophomore debut. But it seems the Gordonsâ chaotic front-office antics are here to stay for at least one more championship run.
Netflix officially confirmed the news via a press release distributed to advertisers during their 2026 Upfronts presentation in New York City, solidifying the sports comedyâs return.
While we didnât get a direct quote from Mindy Kaling or Kate Hudson today, Netflix didnât hold back in bragging about the showâs success. According to the streamer, Running Point has now surpassed a massive 60 million views across its first two seasons. They noted that Season 1 reached #1 on the Global Top 10 (appearing in the Top 10 in 89 countries) and ranked among their top 15 shows worldwide in the first half of 2025. Additionally, the recent release of Season 2 successfully brought Season 1 right back onto the charts.
Here is a breakdown of why Netflix decided to keep the ball in play for Season 3, looking at the viewership data and where the story is heading next after that massive Season 2 cliffhanger.

How well did Running Point Season 2 perform on Netflix?
If you follow our Top 10 reports here at Whatâs on Netflix, youâll know that Running Point Season 2 had a somewhat softer launch than many of us were expecting.
While Season 1 was a breakout hit in early 2025, Season 2 took a minute to warm up on the bench. However, the show demonstrated solid word-of-mouth growth in its second week, which is often a key indicator Netflix looks for when deciding a showâs fate. (You can read our full breakdown of what we knew prior to this renewal in our comprehensive Season 3 preview).
Letâs look at the side-by-side data for the showâs run in the global Top 10 so far:

Netflix Cumulative Views Over Time – Running Point – Season 1 and Running Point – Season 2 (5-week trend)

While Season 2 is currently tracking lower than Season 1, that 27% bump in Week 2 was crucial. In an environment where weâve seen some worrying news for underperforming comedies, that upward momentumâcombined with the star power of Kate Hudsonâwas clearly enough to push Season 3 over the finish line.
What happened at the end of Running Point Season 2?
Warning: The following section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution!
Season 2 of Running Point was an absolute rollercoaster for Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) and the LA Waves, culminating in a championship victory and a massive betrayal.
Throughout the season, Isla was fighting battles on all fronts. Not only did she have to deal with a viral strike from the LA Waves City Dancers (which resulted in Isla hilariously donning sequins and joining them for a routine to Ciaraâs âGet Upâ to settle the dispute), but she also nearly lost her chief of staff, Ali (Brenda Song). Fed up with being ignored while demanding a raise, Ali accepted a lucrative offer from the Toronto Raptors, forcing Isla to fly to Canada to grovel and win her best friend back.

But the biggest headache was undoubtedly her brother, Cam (Justin Theroux). After checking out of rehab early, a not-so-sober Cam spent the season secretly plotting to steal the presidency back from Isla. He embezzled millions from the team, allied himself with O.C. toilet mogul Al âThe Flush Manâ Fleischman (Ken Marino), and attempted to buy out the board. Fortunately, his siblings thwarted his coup when Jackie secured an audio recording of Cam admitting to using Jackieâs urine to pass his drug tests. Cam was ousted, and his shares were distributed among his siblings.
Islaâs personal life was just as chaotic. She officially called off her engagement to Lev right before their rehearsal dinner and eventually rekindled her romance with former LA Waves coach Jay (Jay Ellis). However, Jay is now the coach of their biggest rival, Boston.
Despite all the drama, the season seemingly ended on a high note. In the finals against Boston, star player Marcus returns from experimental knee therapy just in time to hit a game-winning three-pointer, securing the championship for the LA Waves.
The Season 3 Cliffhanger:
The morning after their championship bender, Isla and her siblings wake up to a horrific news broadcast. An ousted Cam has partnered with âThe Flush Manâ to buy and resurrect Los Angelesâs other historic franchise: the LA Industry. To make matters worse? They announce that their new head coach is none other than Jay.
With Cam running a rival LA team and Islaâs love interest coaching them, Season 3 is setting up the ultimate crosstown rivalry.
Looking ahead to the new season, Netflix also confirmed today that Running Point Season 3 will continue production in Los Angeles.
