The show takes on the real-life story of a series of customs officers who were placed undercover in a bid to stop some of the most dangerous drug gangs that had infiltrated Britain in the 80s. Starring Steve Coogan, Tom Burke and Hayley Squires, it’s been a big hit for Netflix.

This BBC crime thriller is also created by Neil Forsyth, who made Legends and is another drama based on real events. Dominic Cooper and Hugh Bonneville lead the cast of the show, which tells the story of he 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, a theft of £26 million of gold. The show was a hit with critics and viewers across two series – both of which are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

‘Unbelievable’, Netflix

If you’re looking for an astonishing story that seems too unbelievable to be true, then you need to watch Unbelievable. ‘When teenager Marie Adler (Kaitlyn Dever) files a police report claiming she’s been sexually assaulted by an intruder in her home, the investigating detectives, as well as the people closest to her, come to doubt the truth of her story,’ says Netflix. ‘Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall (Emmy winners Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) meet while investigating an eerily similar pair of intruder rapes and partner to catch a potential serial rapist.’

Nabhaan Rizwan plays Raza Shar, a second-generation British-Pakistani who is persuaded to work as an undercover informant for two counter-terrorism officers, played by Paddy Considine and Bel Powley. This drama will have you gripped from the beginning and shares with the theme of Legends of normal people thrown into extraordinary situations.

‘Undercover’, BBC iPlayer

Sophie Okenedo won a Royal Television Society Award for her part in this bleak drama which explores what happens when a spy has been undercover for 20 years – in his own family. The drama was informed by the real-life cases of women who discovered they had been tricked into long-term relationships with undercover police officers. In the series, Okenedo plays a successful lawyer whose husband, played by Adrian Lester, was an undercover police officer when they met.

‘Sherwood’, BBC iPlayer

Exploring the effects of undercover work on a community across several decades, Sherwood is one of the finest dramas shown on the BBC in recent years. The first season opens as David Morrisey’s police detective is pulled into a tangled web of revenge when he’s called on to investigate a murder in a Nottinghamshire mining town. The story was in part inspired by two real-life murders in the area in 2004. There are now two series of the show available to watch and a third is reportedly in production.
