It’s currently in early development so stay tuned for more updates.

Anne Hathaway is set to executive produce a new TV series for Disney+ based on one of her most iconic films.

Deadline reports that Ella Enchanted, originally released in 2004, is poised to be reimagined in a new streaming series written by Ilana Wolpert (Anyone But You), with Beth Schwartz (Dead Boy Detectives) joining as showrunner.

The series is in its early stages of development for Miramax Television and Paramount Television Studios.

In a departure from the original film, it will reportedly follow 16-year-old Ella of Frell – inflicted with the curse of obedience – who is sent off to boarding school when her mother unexpectedly dies.

Once there, “she begins to uncover the truth about her curse, builds an unlikely found family, and deals with an extremely inconvenient crush on the prince of her kingdom”, according to the first details from Deadline.

Both the film and the series are loosely based on Gail Carson Levine’s novel of the same name, although the boarding school setting was not included in the original adaptation.

The Disney+ series’ new academic backdrop is lifted from four chapters of the source material, and takes a leaf from Netflix’s wildly successful Wednesday series, based on the Addams Family franchise.

Sure to please fans of the hit Jenna Ortega-led fantasy-drama, Ella Enchanted is also set to be produced by iGen Studios, the company which brought the equally popular young adult series My Life with the Walter Boys to Netflix.

More than 20 years later, the original film starring Hathaway as the intrepid Ella who sets out on adventure to discover the truth behind her magical curse is still beloved and seen as one of the Devil Wears Prada star’s most iconic roles.

One nostalgic fan on Rotten Tomatoes called it the “best childhood movie ever!” in their five-star review.

“This is no joke one of the best movies ever made,” someone concurred on Letterboxd.

And a 10/10 review on IMDb gushed: “Heartwarming. Really just a feel good movie with one of the best actresses of our time.

“Makes you laugh, smile and really reaches your heart. Absolutely love.”

The film also featured a star-studded supporting cast that included Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Cary Elwes (M.I.A.), Minnie Driver (Run Away), and Amandaland stars Joanna Lumley and Lucy Punch.

Ella Enchanted (2004) is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
