Wednesday Season 1 set many records for Netflix as the show chronicling the titular Addams Family character became a viral hit with audiences. As Season 2 ramps up production, the coming-of-age series establishes another mark thanks to its budget.
Per Variety, Wednesday Season 2 became the “largest production to ever film in Ireland” regarding its spending on principal photography in the European nation. According to Screen Ireland, known for welcoming major productions such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, confirmed the record spend.
Ireland’s prime minister, Taoiseach Simon Harris, hailed Wednesday’s spending feat and its boost to the local production sector. “I’m delighted to see Ireland continues to be chosen as a location to film series and movies which supports our economy, creates jobs, showcases our creative talents and promotes our country on a global stage,” Harris, who recently visited the Wednesday set, said in a statement. Netflix’s VP Production EMEA, Anna Mallett, added, “We’re so proud to now bring the cultural juggernaut that is Wednesday to Ireland, as the country’s biggest production, it will create jobs and add millions of Euros to the Irish economy.”
Wednesday Season 2 Moves the Show From Romania to Ireland
Wednesday moved its production base from Romania to Ireland’s County Wicklow ahead of Season 2 filming. In May, Season 2 principal photography began, with the Netflix series confirming its cast, led by Jenna Ortega, who reprises her role as the eponymous teenager possessing psychic powers. The new casting additions include Steve Buscemi and Westworld star Thandiwe Newton.
The first season of Wednesday broke viewership records for Netflix, becoming the most-watched English-language series in the streamer’s history, eclipsing Stranger Things Season 4. The supernatural mystery series, created by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, won multiple Emmys and earned Golden Globe nominations following Season 1’s 2022 release.
Wednesday Season 2 has already teased some major events, including killing off an important character. Ortega, who serves as a producer during the upcoming season, previously hinted at the show focusing more on horror and less on romantic tropes going forward.
No official release window has been confirmed for Wednesday Season 2, though it’s expected to premiere in 2025. All Season 1 episodes are available to stream via Netflix.
