It was more than 20 years ago that Michael Connelly published The Lincoln Lawyer, a spinoff of his beloved series of Harry Bosch novels centered on Los Angeles attorney Mickey Haller, Bosch’s half-brother.

After Matthew McConaughey played Mickey in a 2011 adaptation, the story pivoted to TV in 2022 with the help of creator and executive producer David E. Kelley. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo leads the series as the titular attorney, who operates out of his Lincoln Navigator.

The Lincoln Lawyer, one of our favorite legal dramas on Netflix, has racked up more than 170 million views across its first three seasons, according to the streamer. Season 4 dropped on Feb. 5, adapting 2020’s The Law of Innocence, the sixth book in Connelly’s ongoing series.

The season highlights a more vulnerable side of Mickey, who goes from defender to defendant after being framed for the murder of conman Sam Scales (Christopher Thornton), a former client.

With the season ending on a cliffhanger (and introducing a notable name), fans are understandably curious how the story will continue. Here’s everything we know about The Lincoln Lawyer season 5.

Will there be a season 5 of The Lincoln Lawyer?

Yes, Netflix announced season 5 of The Lincoln Lawyer in January 2025, just a week before the premiere of season 4.

“We’re so excited to share the upcoming season with the audience on Feb. 5, and even more excited to share the news that we’re already hard at work on the next one,” said creator and executive producer Ted Humphrey in a statement. “Season four is the most challenging and intensely personal journey we’ve taken Mickey Haller on yet, and we’re thrilled and grateful to be able to continue the ride in season five!”

What will season 5 of The Lincoln Lawyer be about?

Season 5 of The Lincoln Lawyer will center on the seventh book in Connelly’s series, Resurrection Walk, which was published in 2023. According to a synopsis, the book sees Mickey endeavoring to help the wrongly accused. After he begins investigating the case of a woman who was convicted of killing her ex-husband, he finds himself targeted by powerful people who’d rather it not be reopened.

While Mickey was exonerated at the end of season 4, it happened only after a great deal of legal maneuvering that entangled him with both the FBI and the Armenian mob. All of this will carry over into season 5.

“Being wrongfully accused of something, spending time in jail, and having to fight for your very life or your freedom is just fundamentally different from doing that on behalf of clients that you represent. It can’t not change you,” Humphrey said while discussing the ending with Tudum. “What that change means to Mickey or how that change manifests itself in his life is something we’re excited to explore going forward.”

And then there’s that cliffhanger. In the closing moments of the season 4 finale, Mickey is shot at by members of the Armenian mob. He’s saved by a mysterious woman (played by Cobie Smulders) who claims to be his sister.

“Is she telling the truth? Is she his sister? And if so, what does that mean?” asked Humphrey. “Mickey has these very set ideas about who he is and about his past. What if there’s more to the story than he thought?”

Who’s in the cast of The Lincoln Lawyer season 5?

An official season 5 cast list is forthcoming, but Garcia-Rulfo is confirmed to return along with main cast members Becki Newton (Lorna), Jazz Raycole (Izzy), and Angus Sampson (Cisco). Neve Campbell’s Maggie McPherson will also stay in the mix after spending much of season 4 redefining her complex relationship with Mickey.

The big addition to season 5, though, is Smulders, the actress best known for playing Robin on How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014) and Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (2012–2023). “She’s very unknown at the moment,” Smulders said of her character in a recent interview. She did say, however, that season 5 will be “a family affair.”

Remarks made by Humphrey to Tudum point towards Smulders’ character filling the role played by Harry Bosch, Mickey’s brother-in-law, in Resurrection Walk. “The desire to expand Mickey’s universe in terms of his family connections was always there,” he said, adding that he and the creative team sought to invent a “character who, in some ways, is similar to what’s in the books.”

He continued, “But it’s a completely different person, a completely different character, with a completely different backstory.”
