In yet another major blow for Prince Harry, last week it was made clear just how ostracized from his family he really is after it emerged that he had been uninvited from his cousin Peter Phillips’ upcoming wedding. Reports claim that Harry and wife Meghan Markle – as well as his disgraced uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson – had been removed from the guest list, as Harry, 41, has ‘lost touch’ with Peter in recent years. Other royals, such as Prince William and Kate Middleton, are expected to attend.

And now insiders say the Prince – who had attended Peter’s first wedding and who’d invited him to his 2018 wedding to Meghan – has been left feeling humiliated and heartbroken.

‘Being frozen out of Peter Phillips’ wedding has delivered one of the deepest blows yet to Harry,’ a source tells Closer.

‘Growing up, he adored Peter. He always saw him as one of the more grounded, trustworthy members of the family.’

‘He genuinely didn’t believe it would come to this. He feels deeply hurt and humiliated. But the sentiment within the family – particularly William – became that the day needed to stay very much focused on Peter and Harriet. Nobody wanted headlines dominated by speculation about Harry, Meghan and family tensions. Harry absolutely feels he was frozen out, and privately, he blames his father for allowing it to happen. Harry’s made far more effort behind the scenes than people realise, that’s why this feels like such a slap in the face to him.’

Harry’s on-going feud with his family dates back to 2020, when he and Meghan, 44, stepped down from their roles as senior members of The Firm. Having relocated to the US, the Sussexes set up home in Montecito, California, where they reside with their two children, Prince Archie, six, and four-year-old Princess Lilibet.

While the Royals adhere to a strict ‘never complain, never explain’ PR strategy, Harry has opted to take a different route in recent years. He has frequently spoken out about the rift with his family, taking part in interviews – including a bombshell tell-all with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 – and releasing a memoir, titled Spare, in 2023.

It’s understood that his relationship with his father King Charles had become strained, though the prince has reportedly begun to make amends. However, it’s Harry bond with brother William, 44, that has completely broken down. Though they were once close, it’s thought that the brothers are no longer on speaking terms and have not spoken since the Queen’s funeral in 2022.

And with the tension not appearing to dissolve anytime soon, sources claim that William is relieved that Harry hasn’t made the guest list for Peter’s big day.

For William it’s a relief – he sees it as confirmation that the Sussexes are not simply going to drift back into the fold. Trust is still the huge issue. William especially feels there has to be a line. While Kate’s very protective now of the stability around William and the children, she also would love William and Harry to build bridges and reconcile in some way. She feels William is pushing Harry too far now and the last thing she wants is more drama or emotional upheaval,’ an insider said.

As previously reported by Closer, Harry had been hoping that this summer would give him a chance to reconcile with his family. With several trips across the UK planned over the coming months, including a visit in June for an Invictus Games event, Harry is said to be thinking of staying at Balmoral – the royal estate where his relatives usually spend their summer break.

And if Meghan – who has not visited the UK since 2022 – and the couple’s two children were to join him, Harry had hoped the King would finally be able to bond with his grandchildren. But the latest snub from the royals may have scuppered Harry’s reconciliation plans.

‘The wedding situation has left Harry increasingly uncertain about where he truly stands with the family. It’s shaken him. He thought there might finally be small signs of softening. Instead, this feels like another door closing. He desperately wants his children to experience parts of royal life and family traditions. Balmoral has huge emotional meaning for him. But there’s now a lot more nervousness around any family gathering involving Harry.

‘Meghan thinks Harry is constantly being emotionally pulled around by the family. From her perspective, they either want him back in their lives or they don’t.’

Last week, it emerged that William would be selling one fifth of the Duchy of Cornwall – which provides a private income of over £20m per year to him – across 10 years. An investment of £500m is set to be made into local communities, with William stating, “I’m trying to make sure I’m prioritising stuff that’s going to make people’s lives, living in those areas, better.”

With his focus firmly set on the future and one day taking over the throne, insiders say William isn’t concerned about his younger brother.

We’re told, ‘While Harry continues struggling with exclusion from royal life, Prince William is increasingly focused on shaping a very different public image for the future monarchy.

‘William wants people to see him as grounded and relatable. Very much a future King who understands ordinary pressures and responsibilities. There’s definitely a sense the old system is changing and the contrast between William and Harry has never felt starker.

‘One brother is positioning himself as the stable future of the monarchy, the other is still trying to find a way back into the family he feels shut out from.’
