Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte continued their style tradition at this year’s Trooping the Colour.

For the annual event celebrating the birthday of King Charles, the Princess of Wales, 44, wore a pale blue Catherine Walker dress, topped with a coordinating Philip Treacy hat. Her sons, Prince George, 12, and Prince Louis, 8, matched her in dark blue suits with pale blue ties.

The matching fashions that Charlotte, 11, shared with her mother may have been slightly more subtle, but one choice held a great amount of royal significance. The young princess had small light blue details sewn into her dress to stay on theme with her family.

Princess Charlotte and Princess Kate also wore matching, three-strand pearl bracelets.

Kate’s bracelet is a royal heirloom. The piece was originally designed by Nigel Milne and his wife, Cherry, for Princess Diana, who wore it on a royal tour of Hong Kong in 1989.

Upon Diana’s death in 1997, Prince William inherited the bracelet along with many of Diana’s other jewels. He eventually passed it on to his wife.

Pearls may be significant to Kate for many reasons. They are the birthstone of the month of June, which is when Prince William celebrates his birthday, on June 21. (Trooping the Colour is also held annually in June per tradition, despite the King’s birthday falling on Nov. 14.)

The gems are also heavily associated with healing. Kate has been slowly returning to her royal duties over the past two years after announcing she was in remission from cancer in January 2025.

Royal historian Amanda Foreman previously spoke with PEOPLE about how Princess Kate’s return to Trooping events was a major step forward in returning to royal life: “She is the MVP of the royal family.”

Ailsa Anderson, former press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth, agreed, telling PEOPLE, “Fast-forward, and what a difference a year makes. She’s even more beloved in the nation’s hearts than she was.”
