Ex-husband of Meghan Markle’s former BFF Jessica Mulroney reveals the pair are on ‘positive terms’ after major public rift

Nobody panic: Meghan Markle and Jessica Mulroney are still friends. The Duchess of Sussex and the stylist were once close friends, but reportedly fell out in 2020, when Mulroney was accused of white privilege during an argument about race. Social media was rife with speculation about the breakup, but now Mulroney’s ex-husband, Ben, has given a rare update on the situation.

Speaking on the Can’t Be Censored podcast, the Canadian radio and TV host revealed that his wife and the Duchess are ‘on positive terms’ when asked to give an update on her relationship with Meghan Markle.

‘There’s so much interest in that period, that friendship, all that stuff. Do you want to say anything about where things are?’ asked host Travis Dhanraj after a discussion about the royal wedding in 2018.

‘It’s Jess’ story to tell,’ Ben replied. ‘I wouldn’t speak for her, so if she ever wants to talk about it… but, from what I understand, they are on positive terms.’

Meghan Markle and Jessica Mulroney were friends long before Meghan ever met Prince Harry. A professional stylist, Jessica helped to pick outfits for Meghan’s character on Suits, and is said to have assisted with the Duchess’s wardrobe when she joined the royal family, including the outfit she wore for her engagement photos.

So close was the pair that, according to personal footage published in Meghan and Prince Harry’s Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, the former actress called Jessica when she realised that the Duke of Sussex was about to propose in 2017.

In the lead-up to the royal wedding, Mulroney was described as the Duchess’s ‘unofficial maid of honour’. Her twin sons, Brian and John, served as page boys, alongside Prince George, carrying the veil of Meghan’s Clare Waight Keller dress. Her daughter, Ivy, was a bridesmaid with Princess Charlotte.

When Meghan fell pregnant with Archie a year later, Mulroney was front and centre at her lavish New York baby shower at the Mark Hotel on the Upper East Side, which she co-hosted alongside Serena Williams and Genevieve Hills. She and Ben even joined the Sussexes, in an unofficial capacity, on their first major international royal tour, which took in Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Tonga. The couple paid their own way, with Mulroney supporting Meghan as a stylist during the 16-day trip.

Two years after the wedding, however, the friendship was said to have come to an end after the influencer Sasha Exeter accused Jessica of ‘textbook white privilege’ during the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, noting that ‘her best friend is arguably one of the most famous black women in the world.’ While Mulroney apologised in a separate Instagram post, the influencer went on to share a private message in which Mulroney allegedly alluded to suing for libel.

In the wake of the controversy, Mulroney’s television show I Do, Redo, was pulled by CTV, and the stylist announced that she would ‘step away from my professional engagements’, which included regular showings on Good Morning America.

Headlines regarding her friendship with Meghan Markle followed, with one well-placed source telling Page Six at the time that the Duchess of Sussex had been looking for a reason to end her relationship with Mulroney, who she worried was using their friendship for personal gain.

The row ‘has really given Meghan the excuse she was waiting for to cut Jess off for good,’ the insider said, while another source added: ‘I don’t know what the tipping point was, but Jess has been on the outs for some time. Their friendship is definitely not what it was. And really, how can you have such a close friendship when one person is basically making a career out of the friendship?’

In the wake of the speculations, Mulroney was forced to issue a statement declaring that the two were as close as ever. ‘I’m going to tell this once and for all,’ she wrote in an Instagram story, which she later deleted.

‘Meghan and I are family. She is the kindest friend and has checked up on me every day. Tabloid culture is atrocious. It creates lies and hurtful storyline. Stop feeding into it. Done.’

The speculation amped up during the release of the Duchess of Sussex’s Netflix lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan, which started airing in March 2025. In a show that focused on Meghan and her close friends, Mulroney was notable by her absence.

Jessica and Ben, whose father was the late Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, were reported to have separated in July, after 16 years of marriage. They’ve split,’ a Canadian source told Page Six. ‘Jessica seemed sad, but also relieved to have some clarity.’ Another in-the-know friend confirmed to the news outlet that the couple had gone their separate ways ‘some time ago’.
