The Summer I Turned Pretty introduced another big change in Belly and Conrad’s love story before its series finale.

During the penultimate episode of the hit Prime Video series, which aired Wednesday, September 10, Belly (Lola Tung) adjusted to life in Paris. She got off to a rocky start with two jobs and an apartment with several roommates who weren’t the right fit. Despite the challenges, Belly was determined to make it work after feeling like she blew up her life back home.

Speaking of home, The Summer I Turned Pretty checked in with Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) as he recovered from his canceled wedding to Belly. He (briefly) moved in with Steven (Sean Kaufman), but it wasn’t until Jeremiah was cut off by his dad that he was finally able to stand on his own two feet. Granted, he then moved into Denise’s (Isabella Briggs) spare room, but he branched out and got a job cooking at a restaurant.

Jeremiah also managed to mend things with his brother, Conrad (Chris Briney), after avoiding him for most of the episode. Viewers followed the characters from summer to Christmastime. Jeremiah wasn’t ready to face his brother yet at the holidays, but they were able to talk it out by the next summer and got to a good place.

As for Conrad, he was still yearning as usual. Fans of Jenny Han’s book series will be thrilled to know that Conrad’s letters to Belly were brought to life. In the Prime Video version, however, viewers saw Belly living her life — and finding a connection with a new guy — while Conrad pined for her.

The episode ended with Belly choosing to extend her stay in Paris for another year, but this time in her own space. She even visited a salon to get a haircut because she was looking forward to something new this summer. Little did Belly know that at that very moment, Conrad was on his way to her.

After she responded to his letters with a postcard, Conrad took that as a sign to follow his heart in what marked another major departure from Han’s book We’ll Always Have Summer, where Conrad and Belly didn’t see each other in person until she was back from Paris.

The author still confirmed there would be a “satisfying” ending for everyone.

“A successful love triangle is one where, no matter what happens, people are going to be devastated and heartbroken,” she hinted. “Because if the answer feels really clear and easy, then there’s no real conflict. No matter what you do, someone’s going to be hurt by it.”

The series finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty airs Wednesday, September 17, on Prime Video.
