This article contains spoilers from Emily In Paris. Series four of the Netflix favourite returned today as fans pointed out some Bridgerton similarities.
There has been nearly a two-year hiatus since Emily Cooper (played by Lily Collins) was last seen with that explosive season three finale of Emily in Paris leaving subscribers stunned. But now the wait for fans to get their fix is finally over as season four dropped on Netflix on Thursday, August 15.
The much loved series follows Lily, a young American woman from the Midwest, who uproots her life and takes a new job in Paris, finding herself in the middle of a steamy love triangle. When Emily In Paris was last seen, Camille (Camille Razat) confronted Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) on their wedding day about his feelings for Emily.
She said that she could go through with marrying him for this reason and walked out, leaving Emily’s boyfriend Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) equally upset as he also walked out. However, as the show made its return today, fans were unhappy for another reason, as they pointed out very close similarities to another Netflix favourite – Bridgerton.
Those who have already binged the first 10 episodes of series four have watched on with scenes of steamy carriage escapades to elegant balls. They have taken to social media to complain over the similarities between the two shows, accusing Emily in Paris of “copying” the period drama.
Bridgerton brought viewers its hotly anticipated third season back in June, with fans at the edge of their seats as they watched Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton’s (Luke Newton) love story. One scene in particular was unforgettable to fans as their friendship turned to romance as things heated up in the back of a horse drawn carriage.
A very similar scene in the new instalment of Emily In Paris saw Emily and one of her love interests, Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), rekindle their romance as they begin passionately kissing in a carriage of their own.
Bridgerton even gets a name drop as Emily is talking to her best friend Mindy Chen (Ashley Park) at the ball when they see a carriage suspiciously rocking in the background. She joked: “Oh! Someone’s living out their horny Bridgerton fantasies!”
Pointing out the similarities, one X/Twitter user fumed: “WHY EMILY IN PARIS WANTS TO BE BRIDGERTON SOOO BAD?! literally in 3 episode there was a ball (masquerade ball – if u know, benedict in 4 season), carriage joke about bridgerton, dance with Gabriel and the same shot like Penelope and Colin (wedding breakfast) and a carriage moment.”
Another wrote: “I just watched the Emily in Paris carriage scene and God how do I unsee a scene? That was the awkwardest thing I’ve seen on tv and i’ve shipped Emily and Gabriel since season 1.”
