Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan has teased an emotional send-off for the show when it concludes.

Last month, it was confirmed that the beloved Channel 4 sitcom would be ending after its upcoming third series, with filming finally underway.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com about what fans can expect, however, the Bridgerton star teased an “epic scale”.

“Lisa [McGee, the show’s creator] knew she had huge ambitions with this one, [with] what she wanted to do,” Coughlan, who plays Clare Devlin on Derry Girls, explained.

“She’s a genius. Like, there’s not really any other word for her. She just – everything is so brilliantly balanced and nuanced and the characters, there’s so much detail in every single character in those scripts.”

Touching upon a possible romance between characters James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn) and Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), the actress admitted: “I don’t think I can say much about specific things like about James and Erin, but I think there’s no way people are going to be disappointed.

“It’s really magical. I cried and cried and cried when I finished reading the scripts. Because, you know, it’s our last one.

“It’s bittersweet, but I think we’re sending it off in style,” she added.

Despite series three acting as the finale, McGee previously suggested that we could see more of the Derry group in the future.

“Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday, but for now this is it for us and we’re excited to start filming this series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure,” she said.

The series, which follows a group of teenagers in Derry during the Troubles in the 1990s, also stars Louisa Harland and Jamie-Lee O’Donnell.
