The ex-boyfriend of Kouri Richins, the Utah mother of three and children’s book author accused of killing her husband, testified at her aggravated murder trial on Wednesday, March 4.

Robert Josh Grossman wiped away tears as text messages between him and Richins were shown at the Summit County Courthouse in Park City, Utah, NBC News reported.

In one text exchange prior to the death of Richins’ husband, Eric Richins, Richins allegedly texted Grossman, “If I was divorced right now and ask you to marry me tomorrow, you would?”

“Yes. In Love with Y O U! Of course I would,” he responded, per KSL.

“If he could just go away and you could just be here! Life would be so perfect!!!” she allegedly texted days later.

When Judge Richard Mrazik asked if her former boyfriend needed to take a break, Grossman responded, “I don’t know what I need,” per NBC News.

Richins, 35, is accused of lacing Eric’s bedtime Moscow mule with five times a lethal dose of fentanyl in March 2022.

Prosecutors allege Richins, who had started a real estate business flipping houses, owed lenders “at least $1,847,760,” per court documents.

Believing she would be the beneficiary of life insurance policies on her husband that would cover her debt, Richins, who wrote a children’s book about her husband’s death, allegedly laced the drink, prosecutors claimed.

Grossman, who served with the U.S. military in Iraq, told the jury he began a romantic relationship with Richins in early 2020 after he moved to Utah for a job working with her. Richins allowed him to stay at a home she was flipping, he testified, per NBC News.

Grossman was asked by prosecutors about a conversation he had with Richins after Eric’s death.

“We sat there and talked for quite a while. … I had never seen her that way, obviously, and it was a heavy conversation, and I’m not used to that with her. She’s not used to being open like that,” he said, per KSL. “She asked if I had ever killed anybody. … She asked me how it made me feel or something along those lines. And then I answered her.”

He said the couple split up a few months after Eric’s death and at the time he didn’t believe Richins was involved. After her arrest, he testified that he was “overwhelmed with guilt, sorrow over my wrongdoings, infidelity,” per NBC News.
