The actress, who portrays Queen Charlotte in the hit series, explained there were health and safety concerns that had to be addressed before she wore it.

While a vast amount of work goes into every single one of Golda Rosheuvel’s wigs in Bridgerton, one, in particular, took especially long to design and get approved.

In season 3 of the hit Netflix series, Rosheuvel’s Queen Charlotte wears a wig complete with motorized swans that appear like they’re swimming in a body of water. During an appearance on The View with co-star Luke Thompson, the actress revealed that it took a few years to make that wig.

“Erika [Ökvist], our designer, an amazing human being, a talent beyond talent, her brain is so messed up with ideas,” the actress said when asked about the motorized hair ensemble. “Some of the ideas I had to go, ‘No!’ At one point, she wanted a boat — a full ship — on my head, and I was like, ‘It’s not going to work, babe.’”

Two years ago, Ökvist, who won an Emmy for hairstyling for Bridgerton season 2, came up with the idea to have one of the queen’s wigs be motorized, but it took time to get the wig signed off on because there were “health and safety concerns,” Rosheuvel said. “You don’t want it blowing up on my head or electrocuting me in any way.”

Contrary to what many may think, the swan wig is actually not that heavy, the Queen Charlotte star noted, adding that one of her specifications for it included that the battery pack couldn’t be on her head or in the wig somewhere.

“So you have the plate that’s quite light that the swans go around, and the wire goes down my back into the battery pack secured to my thigh,” she explained. “It was most fun when the sound director would come and lift my skirt off to turn me off in between takes. That was a moment!”
