Netflix’s New Serial Killer Show Dethrones Monster & Becomes #1 On Streaming Charts

A new Netflix show about a notorious serial killer, The Monster of Florence, has dethroned Monster: The Ed Gein Story and is a massive streaming hit. Despite largely negative reviews for Monster: The Ed Gein Story, it has dominated Netflix’s streaming charts since all episodes were released on October 3.

Now, The Monster of Florence has become the #1 show on Netflix’s global streaming charts and is in the top 10 for 90 different countries. It is outperforming the hit romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This season 2, which debuted on October 23, only a day after The Monster of Florence‘s October 22 release. The other shows in the top five of Netflix’s global charts are the military drama Boots, the political thriller The Diplomat, and Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

The Monster of Florence title refers to a real-life serial killer of the same name. The infamous murderer was responsible for 16 deaths around the Florence, Italy area from 1968-1985, with the series’ four episodes exploring the investigation into the long-running case.

Similar to the case of the Zodiac Killer, which was famously adapted in David Fincher’s 2007 Zodiac movie, there are still questions about the Monster of Florence’s real identity. Like the Zodiac Killer, the Monster of Florence also targeted young couples.

When compared to the latest season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster series, The Monster of Florence‘s streaming numbers benefit from being released more recently. However, it is also outperforming The Ed Gein Story when it comes to critics’ reviews. Florence has a 60% fresh critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas Monster season 3 has a rotten 21% score.

Even more impressive is The Monster of Florence being ahead of Nobody Wants This globally, especially after season 1 was on Netflix’s global charts for six consecutive weeks. Nobody Wants This season 2 is #1 in the United States, but The Monster of Florence is not too far behind at #4. Both shows will likely continue to dominate in the coming days, although they will be challenged by the release of The Witcher season 4 on October 30.

While high streaming viewership can lead to more seasons, this will not affect The Monster of Florence, as it was designed to be a miniseries. It is another sign, though, of how popular the true-crime genre has become, especially when it comes to infamous serial killers and cases where there are still lingering questions.
