Expert breaks down videos of accused murderers of Jacqueline âMimi’ Torres-Garcia
A law enforcement expert weighed in on recently released videos involving the two people accused of murdering 11-year-old Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres-Garcia.
Accused murderers Jonatan Nanita and Karla Garcia saw officers off after a noise complaint at their condo in Farmington on Dec. 29 last year.
âHappy holidays,â Nanita said during a police bodycam video.
âSame to you guys,â responded an unnamed officer.
âEnjoy your guysâ night,â Nanita said.
Itâs believed that the body of Garciaâs daughter, Mimi, was allegedly hidden in the basement at the time.
âEverything is good though,â Garcia said.
âEveryone is alright?â an officer asked.
âYes,â Garcia said.
The couple blamed the noise on Garcia being pregnant and moody.
And they reveal theyâve had enough of the complaints.
âWeâre actually moving,â Garcia said.
âFor real?â an officer asked.
âYeah, because of that,â Garcia responded.

âThere may have been some nervousness, but that nervousness may just simply be because police are arriving at their residence. Her explanation that the noise may have been due to the fact that she was pregnant somewhat a questionable excuse, but nonetheless, not enough to raise their suspicion,â Kenneth Gray, a University of New Haven criminal justice professor, said.
Gray said the officers talked with the couple for a bit to get a sense of how nervous they were and if they were telling the truth.
But it appears there were no signs of anything amiss, which might have led to a search and possibly the discovery of the gruesome crime.
There was no mention of 11-year-old Jacqueline, who police think Garcia and Nanita had starved to death a few months earlier.
âIs this your only daughter? You guys have other?â an officer asked as Nanita held a child.
âOne on the way,â Nanita responded pointing toward Garcia who was pregnant. âI have a son. Heâs one. Well he just turned one, sorry.â
âKeeps you guys busy?â the officer asked.
âYeah,â Nanita said.
And no one talks about a possible odor.
Eventually, the smell from the decaying body was apparently so strong that Garcia allegedly later admitted they had to stay with friends and at hotels.
After about four minutes of questioning, the officers take off and file a report noting no signs of fighting.
âThere was no indicators to them that they had to dig deeper than that,â Gray said.
Besides this call, Farmington police also responded to the condo three other times for noise complaints.
This was the only one where officers actually got to speak with Garcia and Nanita.
