Small Things Like These is adapted from County Wicklow author Claire Keegan’s Booker Prize nominated novel of the same name.

It boasts an impressive 94% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and shines a light on the dark history of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries, reportsĀ the Irish Mirror.

Despite its weighty subject matter, the film has garnered a tremendously positive reception from both audiences and critics, with Murphy frequently singled out for his outstanding acting performance.

One viewer wrote: “A masterpiece. Every shot is a masterpiece. The soundtrack is a masterpiece. Every performance is a masterpiece. The casting is beyond perfect. If possible, it’s even better than Claire Keegan’s short story.”

A second viewer concurred: “This is the perfect movie. As with the book, it is carefully laid out with pieces of the puzzle assembling throughout to explain the final move of the protagonist which even he does not appear to have foreseen. Beautiful, gentle and at the same time, devastating. It leaves one asking that perennial question: ‘Do I possess that courage?'”

Another remarked: “A hard to swallow, but fantastically acted, written, and directed film putting religion and its mafia laden tendencies at the forefront. Cillian continues to be a star, with a support cast of epic proportions. Based on a true and very sad story.”

A fourth wrote: “Totally absorbing yet disturbing film, brilliantly led by an understated master class of acting by Cillian Murphy. The sudden ending leaves you literally crying out for more. A modern day masterpiece.”

Yet another heaped praise on Murphy, stating: “An absolutely spectacular, quiet movie. Cillian Murphy provided some of the best, understated acting that I have ever seen. This is a true movie-lover, story-lover type of production … no fuss, no muss, just excellent writing, storytelling and acting.”

One further viewer chipped in: “Following a read of the perfectly written book, I had to watch the film when I heard that Cillian Murphy was the star. He and the rest of the cast bring this extraordinary story to lives. Is there nothing he cannot do! Well worth a watch, it’s poignant from start to finish.”

That said, not everybody was impressed, with a number of viewers describing the film as “slow paced”, “boring” and “depressing”, with one viewer confessing: “Very boring and slow. The acting is good but not enough to keep me interested.”

Small Things Like These is available to stream now on Netflix.
