Man charged following serious crash that killed two women in Camden South, Sydney

The women were struck by an out-of-control stolen car with the driver allegedly on the run from police.

A man has been charged after two woman were killed in a horrific crash in Sydney’s southwest.

The victims, aged 60 and 84, were killed when a red sedan — which had allegedly been involved in a police pursuit — slammed into the Alfa Romeo they were in on the Old Hume Highway in Camden South, at about 11.10am Saturday.

Police allege the driver of the sedan, a 31-year-old man, ran from the crash but was arrested a short distance away at a nearby retirement village.

He was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory testing before being charged with 11 offences including two counts of dangerous driving occasion death-drive manner dangerous, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death and not stop at the stop line at a red light.

He was refused bail and will appear before court on Sunday.

Police initially responded to reports of a stolen car at a service station on King Georges Rd in South Hurstville about 10.20am on Saturday.

A 25-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by the 31-year-old man before his red sedan was stolen.

Officers spotted the stolen car in Beverly Hills a short time later, however, it failed to stop and the cars became involved in a police chase.

The chase was stopped around Bankstown with a PolAir helicopter tracking the car before it smashed into the Alfa Romeo.

It is understood the women who were killed were part of an extended family.

Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden described the 31-year-old man’s alleged driving as “one of the most extreme and dangerous pieces of driving I’ve seen in a long time”.

A critical incident was declared with an investigation to be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
