Akon has revealed just how lucrative a hit record can be, claiming that his classic ‘Smack That’ can generate up to $1 million every quarter and continue earning money for decades.

Speaking on an episode of the Flagrant podcast hosted by Andrew Schulz, uploaded on June 10, the singer and producer discussed the long-term earning potential of major records, using his 2006 hit ‘Smack That’ featuring Eminem as an example.

When asked how much a successful song can generate, Akon explained that it’s difficult to put an exact figure on a record’s lifetime earnings because royalties continue flowing indefinitely.

“I can’t tell you the exact number but I can tell you that that record I’ll be getting paid for that record for the rest of my life,” he said.

After Schulz asked whether the song could be worth millions, Akon broke down how much a major hit can earn over time.

“Every three months that record could generate easily about $150,000 to $200,000,” Akon said. “And that’s for in perpetuity.” However, according to Akon, those figures were generated before the rise of streaming platforms and modern digital distribution.

Akon says streaming and AI have increased a song’s earning potential

The artist explained that the growth of services like Spotify, Apple, Amazon, and Netflix has dramatically increased the value of successful music catalogs.

“Now digital is more accurate,” he said. “When you had Spotify and you got the streaming and you now you have the Netflix of the worlds, the Apples of the worlds, the Amazons of the worlds.”

Akon then claimed that digital revenue effectively tripled the earning potential of a hit record.
