Tributes flow after Australian sports presenter dies in LA aged 41

US-based Australian sports presenter Duncan McKenzie-McHarg has been found dead in Los Angeles at the age of 41.

Local outlet Hollywood LA News reported that McKenzie-McHarg had been formally pronounced dead last Wednesday (LA time).

He had been working for Australian streamer Stan (owned by Nine, the owner of this masthead) when he died and was a large part of grand slam tennis coverage.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Duncan McKenzie-McHarg,” a Stan spokesperson said. “Duncan was a valued contributor to Stan Sport, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.”

The Herald Sun reported that his first big media break was working for Triple M’s Hot Breakfast in 2010 with Eddie McGuire, who told the outlet that McKenzie-McHarg was from Melbourne and studied journalism at Monash University.

He said the news of McKenzie-McHarg’s death “was heartbreaking and devastating”.

“That he turned his natural happy and kind disposition into a skill set that disarmed the world’s biggest stars and built his international career from scratch brought great admiration from his old mates … Our deepest condolence to Duncan’s family and friends. We are all so sad.”

McKenzie-McHarg also worked as a freelancer for Channel Seven and then as a Channel Ten reporter before he headed overseas to be Fox Sports’ US correspondent in 2017.

In a 2023 interview with Radio Today, he said the work was challenging but it was worth it.

“I wake up every day in Los Angeles, and 90 per cent of the time, it’s 25 degrees and sunny. I work a lot in shorts and thongs.”

His family confirmed his death in a statement, saying he was “a deeply loved son, a devoted father to his precious boy Harrison, and a cherished brother to his three siblings”.

“His passing has come as an unimaginable shock, leaving our family heartbroken and at a loss. Duncan was truly extraordinary – a man whose positivity, care and humour touched everyone he met, and who sat at the heart of so many lives, bringing warmth, laughter and joy wherever he went. Our darling Ducky,” they said.
