Netflix’s Bridgerton is Shonda Rhimes’ latest masterpiece. A romance drama set against the backdrop of Regency Era Britain, Bridgerton fuses the aristocratic society of the 1800s with the modern world by using popular music, activating the recall value for 21st-century audiences. From flowing dresses to scintillating scandals, this TV series captures the essence of a period drama.

Adapted from Julia Quinn’s novel series, this television staple enchants audiences with its glamour and beauty. Apart from its excellent cinematography, Bridgerton has well-written characters, each with their eccentricities. However, some of its characters are widely disliked by viewers.

bridgerton-lady-danbury

A wise, orthodox, and sharp-tongued widow, Lady Danbury is the doyenne of London society. She is the Queen’s advisor and confidant. She has some say in the picking of the diamond and the Queen’s actions, or lack thereof, against Lady Whistledown.

In season 2, she tries to be her usual condescending self towards Edwina, lecturing her about the requirements of a debutante in high society London. Despite her ways, she is a kind woman who looks out for the young girls in her care, giving them relevant and good advice.

8Lady Whistledown Entertains The Ton At A High Price

Lady Whistledown runs a secret-revealing gossip column. Her identity is revealed at the end of season 1 as Penelope Featherington. A wallflower who is ignored and neglected the most out of all the characters in Bridgerton, Penelope takes to her quill and parchment to lay bare the dark underbelly of the high-class British aristocracy.

In doing so, she attacks her best friend’s family and other distinguished members of the ton, not even sparing her own family. She scandalizes the most innocent of events and airs others’ dirty laundry for the entire society to see and judge, including digs at the Queen.

7Queen Charlotte’s Self-Importance Has A Bittersweet Effect

Queen Charlotte, Bridgerton Season 2

Queen Charlotte, the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, is the monarch in the series who oversees the ton’s debutantes and picks the diamond of the season. She tends to get overly involved in the matchmaking processes of the debutantes she likes or prefers.

Along with her nosiness in the business of the ton, she takes Lady Whistledown’s words at heart, obsessing over each new issue created and reported by the ton’s gossip. Needless to say, she’s not as beloved as she’d like to believe.

6Phillipa And Prudence Are Right Out Of A Cinderella Story

Bridgerton-Philippa-Prudence-Featherington

The first and second daughters of the Featherington household, Phillipa and Prudence, are akin to Cinderella’s step-sisters in their dynamic with their youngest sister, Penelope Featherington. They are mean, crude, and utterly selfish. Prudence, the eldest of the Featherington siblings, is nosy and self-centered. Phillipa, the middle daughter, is more of a romantic who is aloof and prefers to live in her own world.

While their mother, Lady Featherington, is partly at fault for raising them in such a manner, these two sisters are always condescending towards their youngest sister, constantly ridiculing her.

5It’s High Time Colin Got Over His Failed Love

Colin Bridgerton Reading a Paper

Colin Bridgerton was romantically involved with Marina Thompson until the two parted ways, much to Colin’s dismay. Colin takes a solo trip to Greece to clear his mind and reflect on the events of his life that led him to this moment.

When he comes back home after his trip, all he can do is talk about Greece, irritating his family members to the point of ridicule. He goes to see Marina, now Lady Crane, who is now happily married with two children. A lovelorn puppy, Colin behaves childishly, warranting a reality check from Marina.

4Lady Featherington’s Personality Is A Red Flag

Baroness Featherington, Portia Featherington, is the matriarch of the Featherington household. She is a cunning and selfish woman who is materialistic to a fault. Her aim in life is to get her daughters married to rich men as soon as possible and live a luxurious and lavish life.

She blatantly neglects her youngest daughter, Penelope. Portia constantly pulls Penelope down by attacking her choices and dreams. She also joins Jack Featherington in his long con, backing out at the last moment to save face.

3Kate Needs To Act Less Like A Guard Dog

Kate in Bridgerton

Kate Sharma and Edwina Sharma are the newest additions to Bridgerton’s main cast. They travel to London to find a suitable mate for Edwina. However, Kate’s overprotective nature does more harm than good when it comes to Edwina’s wishes and future. She acts like a guard dog, fending off any man who has even the slightest of flaws.

While her sisterly love is commendable, she ends up projecting her wishes and dreams on her younger sibling, rendering Edwina’s wishes and feelings irrelevant. No one likes an overbearing sibling.

2Anthony’s Sense Of Duty Is A Burden On His Family

Viscount Anthony Bridgerton lost his father to a bee sting at a very young age. Faced with the daunting position and the numerous responsibilities that come with it, Anthony learned to suppress his wants and desires. He always put his family before him, managing their finances and keeping the family name out of scandal.

However, when the time comes for Anthony to choose a wife, he goes in with a list of ideal traits of a woman who is willing to bear children and help continue the family name of Bridgerton, much to the dismay of Violet and Daphne.

bridgerton's daphne

The female protagonist of the first season, Daphne Bridgerton is the eldest of the Bridgerton daughters. Introduced as a debutante in season 1, Daphne is the most popular and sought-after maiden. She falls in love with and marries Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, after a series of misguided events.

However, Simon was adamant that he would not father a child, given his traumatic childhood experiences. Daphne finds out that Simon can biologically have children and flies off the handle, forcing him to have sexual relations with her, despite Simon’s constant refusal.
