US rapper A$AP Rocky has emerged as one of the names linked with a takeover at League Two club Tranmere Rovers according to reports over the course of the weekend. The artist, whose real name is Rakim Myers, has been linked with a potential buy-out of the Super White Army alongside Donald Trump’s former lawyer, Joe Tacopina.
Current Tranmere Rovers chairman Mark Palios confirmed that 58-year-old Tacopina had entered talks to buy the club, with the former Football Association CEO looking to sell the club after ten years at the helm. “Joe Tacopina has come to the game. I’m under an NDA in terms of [takeover talks] with a number of people but Joe has come to the games, he’s not been afraid to put his presence out there,” Palios told talkSPORT.
“At the end of the day, whether he brings A$AP Rocky in or not is down to him. It’s the type of thing I think would enhance his consortium because they can add value to the commercial side. A$AP’s [partner] is, of course, Rihanna.
“Then you get into the whole aspect of it, which doesn’t sound like football but it actually is football because you have two potentials in a club. The football potential and – because of the pyramid we have in this country – that potential can be as much as you want to make of it if you want to fund it.
“So at the very top end you have got sovereign states funding it, and that’s one of the problems of the Premier League at the moment. The other potential you have got is the commercial potential of the club, which we have tried to show is actually quite significant.
“And if you add onto that the impact of celebrities, like Rihanna, then you can see that would greatly increase the commercial potential of the club. The Wrexham journey is something that has been noticed by a lot of people… so it is something that is quite attractive to a lot of people.”
But who is A$AP Rocky and what do we know of him? The rapper’s current net worth is estimated at around £15million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. His income fluctuates based on touring and music release schedules, but in 2016, he earned a whopping £11.1million.
His partner is Barbados-born singer, Rhianna and the songwriter, actress, and entrepreneur has a net worth of £1.073 billion and was previously the richest female musician in the world before Taylor Swift’s Eras tour. The pair have two children together.
A$AP Rocky first came onto the music scene back in 2007 as part of the A$AP Mob Crew and is well known worldwide. The 36-year-old is currently on trial for his alleged involvement in a 2021 shooting. The rapper has pleaded not guilty, after being charged with two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
“On November 6, 2021, Aaron 10:15 p.m., an argument between two acquaintances occurred in the area of Selma Avenue and Argyle Avenue in the Hollywood area,” a statement from the LAPD read. “The argument escalated and resulted in the suspect firing a handgun at the victim. The victim sustained a minor injury from the incident and later sought his medical treatment. Following the shooting, the suspect and two additional males fled the area on foot.”
The Associated Press claims Rocky could face up to 24 years behind bars if found guilty on all charges in connection with the 2021 shooting. It claims Rocky’s attorney, who so happens to be Tacopina, noted that they weren’t shocked when a judge moved forward with the trial, which started yesterday, October 21.
“We’re not disappointed, not surprised, we expected to go to trial, we’ve been planning for trial all along,” the attorney said. “Rocky is going to be vindicated when all this is said and done, without question.”
Tacopina said that “there are some real problems with the testimony of the complainant,” before adding: “I think there’s not enough evidence.”
