A newĀ Netflix crime documentary reveals the jaw-dropping details behind an extraordinary case.
According to the synopsis of The Crash on Netflix, a car carrying three young adults slams into a brick building at 100 miles per hour in Strongsville, Ohio, leaving twoĀ lives lostĀ and one sole survivor.
In the early hours of July 31, 2022,Ā 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla was driving her boyfriend, Dom, and his friend, Davion, home from a party when the unthinkable happened. Russo and Flanagan were declared dead at the scene while Shirilla was seriously injured.
But as detectives comb through the wreckage, what first appears to be a tragic accident begins to look like a calculated crime. The Crash takes a deep dive into “the volatile relationship at the centre, examining the shifting narratives of that fateful night to explore where a fatal mistake ends and cold-blooded murder begins”.
Prosecutors argued during a 2023 trial that she intentionally crashed the car to kill Russo. She claimed to have no recollection of the moments before her car hit the wall.
However, she was found guilty on all counts, including the murder of of her boyfriend Dominic Russo, 20, and other passenger Davion Flanagan, 19.

What was Mackenzie Shirilla’s sentence?
Judge Nancy Russo found Shirilla guilty on four counts of felonious assault and two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide. She was handed a sentence of two 15-years-to-life in prison sentences for each murder charge she was found guilty of. The judge declared that they would be served concurrently with credit for time served.
Shirilla’s driver’s license was also permanently suspended. Judge Russo explained to the court that she faced a tough decision on whether to have the sentences run consecutively or concurrently. Despite opting for the latter, she noted that there was a ‘very good likliehood’ Shirilla could spend the rest of her life in prison.
As Judge Russo announced the verdict, she called Shirilla “literal hell on wheels”. WKYC Channel 3 shared footage of the sentencing online where the Judge’s remarks can be heard.
She said: “This was not reckless driving. This was murder. The video clearly shows the purpose and intent of the defendant. She chose a course of death and destruction that day.
“She morphs from a responsible driver to literal hell on wheels as she makes her way down the street. Mackenzie alone made the decision to drive the car, to drive an obscure route, a route she visited a few days before, and a route not routinely taken by her.
“Mackenzie alone chose a time to make the drive, early in the morning, when any reasonable person would expect a few people would be nearby to witness it or offer life-saving assistance.
“She made these decisions despite knowing, as any reasonable person would, that her mission of death could’ve involved others not even in the car with her – other people, other cars, pedestrians.
“Mackenzie alone decided to push the pedal to the floor and demand the ultimate speed of that vehicle to 92 mph. She alone decided what was to be. Mackenzie decided death was the ultimate goal that day, and she alone made that decision for Dominic and Davion.”

Shirilla, also read a statement out in court at the time of her sentencing. Through tears, she said: “To the families of Dom and Davion, I am so deeply sorry. I hope one day you can see how I’d never let this happen or do it on purpose. I wish I could remember what happened. I’m just so sorry.
“I’m heartbroken. I loved Dom and Davion. We were all friends and Dom was my soulmate. I wish I could take all your pain away. I am so sorry. And to my family, thank for the support and all the love you guys give. Thank you for fighting with me. I love you all so much.”
Shirilla is incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW) in Marysville, Ohio.
The Crash is streaming on Netflix from May 15.
