Carrie Underwood Shares Advice for American Idol Season 24 Winner Hannah Harper: ‘I’ve Been a Stan’

After Harper was crowned the winner of season 24 of American Idol, Underwood caught up with a small group of journalists and reflected on the contestant’s journey — beginning with her emotional audition.

“I’ve been a stan for Hannah since the beginning,” Underwood, 43, said. “There’s something about her that’s so relatable and I feel like in the end that’s why people voted her.”

She continued, “They’re just like, ‘I see a bit of myself in her’ and you just want to root for her.”

When asked if she had any wisdom to impart, Underwood said that any advice would be about “being a mother in the business.”

“I’ve done things well, I’ve done things terribly,” the “Before He Cheats” singer said. “She’s a really great songwriter and she’s proven that time and time again. She’s already got material, which is half the battle. I’m excited to see what she does and where she goes.”

Meanwhile, Harper, 25, said that when her name was announced — she “couldn’t believe it.”

“It doesn’t feel like real life. I’m still waiting to wake up. It’s crazy,” she said.

After she was crowned the winner, Harper became the second female country singer to win the singing competition show. Underwood was the first in 2005.

“That’s some big shoes to fill. So I feel honored to carry that badge but also sick to my stomach that I have to carry that badge,” she said.

Harper also said that Underwood spoke with her after the show and told her about the ways in which she’s “got it down” as a mother and entertainer.

Last month, Underwood gave a special gift to all Idol contestants in the Top 11 — and Harper shared the note the country singer wrote her on social media.

“Y’all, she’s as down-to-earth and genuine as they come. Just a good, kind human. I love her dearly,” Harper wrote in the caption section, in part.

The season 24 American Idol finale aired Monday, May 11 and Jordan McCullough ended up in second place. Keyla Richardson came in third.
