Netflix Is Finally Fixing Its ‘Bridgerton’ Release Date Problem For Season 5

Netflix hasn’t provided any window but based on new intel on filming, we can make a good prediction on when it’s coming.

Netflix has a notorious problem with the time between seasons for its biggest shows. Whether it’s Stranger Things, The Witcher, or Wednesday, fans are routinely forced to wait two to three years for a new batch of episodes. Bridgerton has absolutely suffered from this exact same streaming-era bloat. Season 3 aired in the summer of 2024, and Season 4 didn’t wrap up until late February 2026—a nearly two-year gap.

It shouldn’t take so long for season 5!

As already announced, Bridgerton Season 5 is already in active production in the United Kingdom. Netflix renewing the hit series for Seasons 5 and 6 well ahead of time has clearly paid off, allowing showrunner Jess Brownell and the Shondaland team to keep the train moving without waiting around for 28-day viewership metrics to justify a greenlight.

Here is the breakdown of the updated production schedule and the math on when Season 5 will actually release:

Filming: Production officially commenced in early Spring 2026 (Netflix confirmed on March 24th but rumors swirled one or two weeks before then) and is scheduled to shoot through early Fall 2026, we can report.
Post-Production: While Bridgerton doesn’t require the level of heavy CGI seen in Stranger Things, it does require extensive editing, ADR, and recording its orchestral pop covers. For a show of this size, post-production typically takes around 6 to 8 months.
The Release Date Estimate: If filming wraps by September or October 2026, 6-8 months of post-production puts us squarely in Spring or Summer 2027.

Some previous behind-the-scenes reporting estimated we might not see the show return until late 2027 or even early 2028. But given this highly accelerated filming schedule—where the cast and crew were basically back on set immediately alongside the release of the Season 4 finale—a mid-2027 release date is a very safe bet. That means we are looking at roughly a 14- to 16-month gap between seasons, a massive improvement over the grueling wait for Season 4.

Of course, as always with productions, things ebb and flow and can change dramatically.

Bridgerton Season 5 Filming Codename

The Bridgerton Season 5 filming codename is “New Cross,” we can confirm. This can be interpreted in a few ways for Francesca and Michaela’s romance, as well as another fan-favorite character.

The codenames have been very clever in the past:

Season 2 (Anthony & Kate) was “Waterloo” — representing a powerful, control-obsessed man finally meeting his match and surrendering to a force he couldn’t defeat (love).
Season 3 (Colin & Penelope) was “Hampstead” — historically one of the most literary areas in England, serving as a nod to writers, observation, and Lady Whistledown.
Season 4 (Benedict & Sophie) was “Vauxhall” — famous for its 18th and 19th-century masquerade balls where social rules loosened and identities were blurred.

Some on Reddit have theorized that, geographically, London’s New Cross station is the very next railway stop after St. John’s, perfectly mirroring Francesca’s emotional journey of moving on from her late husband, John Stirling, to her new chapter with Michaela. Thematically, the name represents the literal crossroads Francesca faces as she is torn between her pragmatic intentions to remarry and her unexpected, passionate desires. Additionally, the district’s modern reputation as a vibrant hub for music and LGBTQ+ culture perfectly aligns with Francesca’s identity as a pianist and the series’s first central sapphic love story.

Latest Filming Snaps and Speculation

With Francesca and Michaela officially taking center stage as our new leads, Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza are at the helm this time around. The massive ensemble cast is also slated to return, including Jonathan Bailey, Simone Ashley, Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, and Golda Rosheuvel, with Julie Andrews once again voicing Lady Whistledown.

Of course, we also just recently got some first looks behind the scenes. Those photos, which we exclusively posted on Thursday, sent fans rabid across social media, trying to identify some of the newer faces and confirming the return of Eloise.

It’s rare to get any behind-the-scenes snaps of the cast (beyond officially released photos), given the series is filmed behind closed doors at Shepperton Studios. However, UnboxPHD returned on Friday to snap even more extras, filming a ball scene in central London. In the footage, you can see Netflix going to great lengths to maintain secrecy, forcing the cast and extras to wear heavy black cloaks outside of Goldsmiths’ Hall to hide their magnificent costumes from the paparazzi.

Furthermore, Bridgerton superfan Cassandra Morann (@cassmorann) recently caught a glimpse of Season 5 filming at a grand, new location in London. She observed numerous extras in gorgeous evening wear alongside actors Emma Naomi (Alice Mondritch) and Hugh Sachs (Brimsley), leading her to speculate that the production was filming a Queen’s ball. Although Morann didn’t personally spot other key figures like Francesca or Michaela, she acknowledged reports that Claudia Jessie was also seen on set.
