Netflix’s Creepy Cult Thriller Series Gets “Brilliant” Season 2 Update [Exclusive]

After his most recent turn in Leo Woodall‘s mathematically driven action thriller Prime Target at Apple TV, Fra Fee‘s next small-screen project has arrived. The actor, who’s enjoyed a rich, award-winning career in theater along with a solid on-screen resume anchored by 2012’s Les Misérables and the MCU’s Hawkeye, is now one of the leads of Netflix’s British cult thriller Unchosen, set in and around a conservative Christian sect. He’s cast as Sam, an escaped convict whose arrival threatens to upend the life of a married mother and challenges the reality created by the strict community. And although it’s billed as a miniseries, and it’s far too early to judge how viewers will react, there’s already something about Sam that has Fee contemplating ways to expand the story in a second season.

Collider’s Maggie Lovitt sat down with Fee ahead of his appearance on our behind the scens series, Set Stories, to talk all things Unchosen before its streaming release. Among the topics discussed was whether there was a path to continue Sam’s journey beyond its six-episode run. The show isn’t necessarily built with a multi-season arc in mind, following the contained journey of Rosie (Molly Windsor) as she meets with Sam and begins to question whether the cult she lives in really has her best interests at heart or is simply trying to control her. As cracks form in her marriage with her husband, Adam, played by Sex Education‘s Asa Butterfield, Sam presents a potential path to liberation, but his own dark past complicates Rosie’s decision over which side offers her the most safety.

Unchosen may say all that it wants to with its lone run, but how the season ends for Sam and where he winds up within the church leave some doors open for more. Fee acknowledges that, while there’s no inherent need to continue, he’s also not quite ready to leave behind a character that feels so uniquely “brilliant.” Moreover, he has confidence that series creator Julie Gearey, who previously created the BBC show Prisoners’ Wives, has already considered what could come next if the thriller does catch fire and there’s demand for more. “I would love to continue his journey simply because I hadn’t come across such a brilliant character in so long, really, and I would just love to explore him further. But as you said, it’s a very satisfying end to the show, and if it were to end here, it’s quite a satisfying one. But you know, like anything, if you know these shows, if it’s a big success, you know they’ll want to carry it on, and I think Julie probably has some ideas up her sleeve already. “

Fra Fee Has Only One Ask for an ‘Unchosen’ Season 2

Getting a Season 2 for Unchosen would mean one slight downside for Fee — the hair. The cult doesn’t exactly allow for a ‘do of his liking, though it’s a small price to pay to keep playing around in this world. “I just didn’t really like the hairstyle,” he joked. “Whenever you’re in that position in that group, the hair is just really lame, but I’d have to get used to that.” At the suggestion of pushing for a few changes, he wholeheartedly agreed that a bit of modernization would do some good. “Exactly! We’re going to redefine the fellowship.”

Rounding out the cast of the darkly romantic drama alongside Fee, Windsor, and Butterfield are Siobhan Finneran, Christopher Eccleston, Alexa Davies, Olivia Pickering, and Rory Wilmot. Two experienced directors are at the helm in A Discovery of Witches alum Philippa Langdale and BAFTA winner Jim Loach of Criminal Record fame. It represents a return to Netflix for Fee, who was previously seen playing the tyrant Balisarius on the platform in Zack Snyder‘s two-part space opera Rebel Moon and lending his voice to the starry animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol. Next on the docket for him will be Snyder’s long-gestating passion project, The Last Photograph, also reuniting him with fellow Rebel Moon actor Stuart Martin.
