Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Family Christmas Card Has a Deeper Hidden Meaning Than Initially Meets the Eye

Take a closer look and the symbolism becomes clear.

On December 18, Prince William and Kate Middleton released their annual Christmas card.

The outdoor setting and the daffodils in bloom carries a deep significance.

In a Christmas card photo that clearly exhibits the close bond between them, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis pose together, sitting in the grass in front of a field of daffodils.

The family of five—as they often do—coordinated in earth tones for the photo, taken back in April by photographer Josh Shinner.

Why choose a photo taken back in April for the family Christmas card? After all, this family is one of the most photographed families in the world, right? Well, there’s likely a deeper meaning—particularly when it comes to the daffodils. If you’ll remember, back in March 2024, when the Princess of Wales released that devastating video message announcing that she had been diagnosed with cancer, she was sitting on a bench at Windsor Castle in front of a field of daffodils. Daffodils, as they still do in 2025, carry a double meaning for the future queen.

In her video message, she shared how it had been an “incredibly tough couple of months” since her diagnosis, telling the world, “It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be okay.”

“As I have said to them—I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal, in mind, body, and spirits,” she continued.

It wasn’t an accident that Kate spoke these words in front of a field of daffodils then, and it’s likely not an accident that she and her family were photographed in front of them now—a symbolic full circle moment nearly one year after the princess announced she is in remission in January 2025. Daffodils not only represent the fight against cancer, but daffodils are also the national flower of Wales—perfect for the Prince and Princess of Wales.

“In the language of flowers, daffodils represent new beginnings as well as resilience,” according to Jill Brooke of Florists’ Review (and per Town & Country). “In fact, there is a Daffodil Day each year. Wearing the flowers is a statement in support of survivors and a call to fight [cancer]. Survivors, patients, friends, and family wear a daffodil on their lapels.”

Daffodils are used as a symbol of hope when it comes to the fight against cancer, according to Cancer Society. It also is the national flower of Wales, worn annually on March 1, St. David’s Day, each year.

It’s also likely not a coincidence that the Wales family Christmas card—released on December 18—was taken in nature. Many of the family’s Christmas cards are shot outdoors, and Kate has been very open about her connection to nature, even launching a quarterly “Mother Nature” video series earlier this year. In the inaugural video, the Princess of Wales spoke about how nature improved her mental health amid her cancer journey, saying, “Over the past year, nature has been my sanctuary. The natural world’s capacity to inspire us, to nurture us, and to help us heal and grow is boundless and has been understood for generations.”

Earlier this year, Kate joined the Scouts for an outing in the Lake District, and Chief Scout Dwayne Fields told People, “She would say, ‘During my recovery, I spent a lot of time in the outdoors because that’s where I felt at peace.’”

“When people speak about themselves, it feels like they are giving you something,” he continued, adding, “That’s her superpower. She’s a wonderfully warm person and invites you into a conversation.”

Kate has also spoken about how nature connects her to her family. “Spending quality time together is such an important aspect of family life,” she once wrote. “For me, as a mother, it is the simple family moments like playing outside together that I cherish.”
